Mattel releases limited edition Zendaya Barbie doll.

Today, Mattel released its long-awaited Zendaya Barbie, featuring 19-year-old singer and Disney star Zendaya Coleman decked out in her (inadvertently controversial) 2015 Oscar look: an off-the-shoulder Vivienne Westwood dress and a long set of dreads. “When I was little I couldn’t find a Barbie that looked like me, my…how times have changed,” the actress wrote on her Instagram, along with a photo of the doll. “Thank you @barbie for this honor and for allowing me to be apart of your diversification and expansion of the definition of beauty. Mattel approached the former Disney star about creating a doll in her likeness earlier this year and within a few short months, we were finally given a sneak peek of one of the most anticipated additions to the Barbie family.Last week, Barbie announced that the company would be making a one-of-a-kind Zendaya doll, modeled off of the actress’s look from this year’s Oscars red carpet. It was so much fun recreating this iconic look she wore at the Oscars, from the #fauxlocs originally done by @theshelbyswain to the @viviennewestwoodofficial gown! Diversity among American children is far greater than the population as a whole, with more than half of the nation’s children expected to be part of a minority race or ethnic group by around 2020.

Mad love to the amazingly talented team at Mattel that I work with; sculptors, face painters, hair designers, patternmakers, seamstresses and more!
