What ‘Batman v Superman’ sneak peek reveals and why audiences want this movie

At last, Batfleck is unmasked in ‘Batman v Superman’ sneak. Here’s what we’re really seeing..

In a new teaser trailer for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” Ben Affleck’s Batman is unmasked at the hands of nemesis Superman (Henry Cavill).WITH JUST four months to go till DC justice dawns, Warner Bros. has released a 50-second teaser trailer that pits the Big Two superheroes, face to sneering face.

The brief clip, which debuted Monday night, shows the Caped Crusader strung up by his wrists as the Man of Steel marches angrily towards him before ripping off his mask. And the big “reveal” couldn’t be more literal, as Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne is unmasked by Henry Cavill’s Superman — who may or may not be under some big baddie’s mind control. Fans who want to see even more footage from director Zack Synder’s highly anticipated flick can see a brand new trailer Wednesday on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” Yet here we are, with an unmasked Bruce Wayne — who is wearing a trench coat over his Batsuit, for some reason — chained to a ceiling while Superman’s angry glare smothers him. Superman has been at the head of his own films before, with Cavill taking on the role for the 2013 movie “Man of Steel,” and Batman was the focus of director Christopher Nolan’s trilogy (though he was not portrayed by Affleck, who is new to the role).

It’s hard to think Warner Bros., who releases movies based on the DC Comics characters, hasn’t been looking to comics rival Marvel for inspiration. If you’re not onboard, you better hop on the bat-wagon now before everyone starts loving Batfleck.” I have a gut feeling that there will be “best Bat ever” talk after this.

Not that Affleck himself is going to be so much better than Keaton or Bale, but this role, everything from the script, to the design of the suit, is the closest thing to Batman jumping from comic-book panel to the big screen. Audiences have seen “versus” movies before with everything from monster movies from decades past to more modern movies like 2003’s “Freddy vs. Predator.” Now many superhero movies are also based on this idea. 2012’s “The Avengers,” which is one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, had heroes like Captain America and Iron Man team up, but it also had many of them battle first. Supes, meanwhile, scowls at that cowl with a rage-contempt that’s indeed so uncharacteristic of him that you wonder whether that’s the rage-joy of Lex behind it. I also get a sense that Affleck’s Batman will bring out something new in Cavill’s performance; two actors who can register as somewhere between stiff to wooden opposite more nimble actors seem to be on the same keyed-in wavelength here — like an actor-tractor beam.
