9 inspiring Mindy Kaling quotes to live by.

The Mindy Project gets a new life on Tuesday, Sept. 15, when season four of Mindy Kaling’s comedy debuts on Hulu following its untimely (and unjust) cancellation by Fox.

As the star of her own television series and a bestselling author with another book on the way, Mindy Kaling is the epitome of success, and now the talented is taking on yet another daunting project – working with an ex. Style for a candid interview, in which she talks marriage, children, network television and even what she wants to be for Halloween. “I think I’ve decided that unlike everything else in my life, I’m going to be fast and loose about kids.

And then the crown jewel: A celebrity-approved Bugaboo sits in the corner of the set, as star/creator/writer Mindy Kaling, dressed in a bright pair of turquoise pajamas, toils at the dining room table next to a fair-haired fake baby in a bassinet. “Well Leo, hold on to your pacifier, because your mom is about to transform into a modern mominista,” says Kaling, whose character scoffs at the blog’s first suggestion. “Dress nice? Being called fat is not like being called stupid or unfunny, which is the worst thing you could ever say to me.” 5. “I find it very sad that so many girls who look up to me or are interested in me are young women of color who have been told that they are ugly and who feel that they are not normal. B—-, you don’t even have to ask.” Off-camera, Kaling, who cut her comedy teeth writing and starring in The Office, is marveling at how her new bosses at Hulu sent virtually no notes (network-speak for strongly-suggested feedback) on the premiere episode.

I think it’s so important for women who look like me find that they can be beautiful or objects of love, attention, and affection.” 9. “Insults about the way I look can’t be the thing that harms me and my heart the most. But the thing I ask every parent that I really admire, the one comment they all have is that they wish they had kids earlier.” “I admire [a good marriage] when I see it. Despite their dating history, the two have famously remained good friends – and are often the subject of much speculation about how they remain so close without their past feelings getting in the way, something which Mindy insists is not an issue. ‘I don’t know if I would have written this book with him five years ago,’ Mindy told Yahoo Style of working with B.J. ‘But no, it’s not weird at all. The series moves to the streaming service after spending its first three seasons on Fox, where it was a cult favorite yet low-rated stepchild at a network more focused on newer hits such as Empire and Last Man on Earth. We fight all the time.’ In her new collection of essays Why Not Me?, which debuts next Tuesday, Mindy writes about B.J. falling asleep on famed playwright Edward Albee when she took him to see the award-winning play Doubt.

Reruns on Hulu made it “consistently one of our most popular shows,” says Craig Erwich, SVP and head of content. “We wanted her to keep making the same show she was making. That’s the show people know and love.” (Hulu agreed to produce 26 episodes, to be released weekly, and has an option for a fifth season.) Kaling plays a witty, celebrity-obsessed OB-GYN who got knocked up by her co-worker, the devoutly Catholic and athletic Danny Castellano (Chris Messina), who remains committed to her but refuses to propose after a bitter divorce with his first wife. Mindy, who said she ‘dates on Saturdays’, added that she is now more aware of what she likes in a partner, which she said makes ‘dating harder and easier’ – and sometimes just the idea of someone is enough to keep her happy. Only now, an angry, pregnant Mindy, who has no idea of Danny’s whereabouts, dreams up what life would be like without him (enter Joseph Gordon-Levitt as her dream-sequence husband, a successful reality-TV producer, and Freida Pinto as Danny’s hot new Indian girlfriend).

Plus, you’ll get to see Ike Barinholtz in a short, pink ladies’ bathrobe (oh, Morgan), guest stars Garret Dillahunt and Fortune Feimster, Tamra (Xosha Roquemore) helping poor Jeremy (Ed Weeks) with his girl problems, Mindy’s parents, Mindy’s oh-so-Mindy problems (don’t you hate when you drop your personal pizza face down while holding your newborn?), and Danny jumping onto the subway tracks in what is clearly a grand romantic gesture (that is actual nightmare material, though. Having a baby on set (well, babies; several infants are on standby for the show) has been “really fun,” she says. “I’ve learned so much about the practical handling of infants.

But it’s very different to have to act as a baby’s mother and to really want to play that role on screen.” Finding Leo was “a little challenging because I am Indian (and) Chris is Italian,” she says. “So to find a baby that looked racially half and half of ours — we had to do a little audition process and see lots of babies of different ethnicities.” Early episodes toggle between office shenanigans while Mindy’s on maternity leave — Garret Dillahunt plays her compromised replacement — and Mindy (a doctor who “should know a lot about pregnant women but nothing about babies,” Kaling says) doing mommyhood her way. “Her baby is her No. 1 priority,” Kaling says, “but what she chooses to teach the baby — that’s what’s going to make her different than a lot of other moms on TV.” For example, she includes an essay about how she once had too many glasses of Champagne at a baby shower for an ‘extremely famous pop singer’ only to offend the host by cracking a joke about Hollywood stars who are against vaccinations.

The book is a candid and humorous look at her life, and Mindy, who admitted she has an Egg McMuffin and a side of hashbrowns from McDonald’s every Monday, also reflects on the fact that like anyone else, she sometimes wishes she was thinner. ‘Like everyone else, I like get rich quick schemes and get thin quick schemes.
