Jimmy Fallon Explains Injury on ‘Tonight Show’: ‘Usually They Cut Your Finger Off’.

Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon spent 10 days in a hospital intensive care unit after tripping in his kitchen and injuring a finger so badly it required six hours of microsurgery to save. LeBron James stopped by The Tonight Show on Tuesday to promote his upcoming movie Trainwreck, and while he was there Jimmy Fallon challenged the Cavaliers star to a game of “Faceketball.” The four-time MVP and the injured host squared off in a first to three game of the newly invented sport in which the hoops are worn on the players heads, and James gave Fallon a slight advantage by staying seated for the contest. It was like a slapstick cartoon or a schlock horror film: as he tripped on a kitchen rug his wife loves but he hates, Tonight Show presenter Jimmy Fallon caught his ring on the benchtop and as he went down, the ring (and the finger) stayed behind.Jimmy Fallon made his “Tonight Show” return on Monday after a two-week hiatus, revealing the gruesome details of the hand injury that almost cost him his finger.

The comic was back at work Monday for the first time following the June 26 accident in his New York home, wearing a cast on his left hand that extended nearly to the fingernail of his ring finger. The comedian and the two-time Finals champion are evenly matched at the game to the surprise of the audience and James himself, which leads to a dunk-off, where James can finally show his stuff by snapping the rim on his game-ending slam. Called “ring avulsion”, the condition he suffered in the accident on June 26 meant he was rushed to New York’s Bellevue Hospital emergency room, after tendons in the finger were separated and the digit was bent at a ludicrous angle.

Perhaps Fallon’s strong showing in faceketball can be attributed to the host’s brand new, special edition shoes Nike and LeBron brought for Fallon that were made to celebrate the release of Trainwreck on Friday. A microsurgeon operated on his hand for six hours, using a vein removed from his foot to save the finger, which should recover sensation in a couple of months, the comedian said. He was in intensive care for 10 days. “So basically what happened is, I tripped and fell in my kitchen on a braided rug that my wife loves and I can’t wait to burn it to the ground,” he told viewers. “I tripped and fell and I caught my fall… So I go, ‘Oh my god, did I just break my finger?’ ” After a visit to one hospital, he was told the finger was not broken but needed special treatment so he was sent to Bellevue. “Apparently the odds aren’t great with these things,” Fallon said. “This happens a lot and the odds are not — usually they’re just gonna cut your finger off.” Fallon told Variety that during his hospital stay, he realised that despite all the pain, there was a positive result. “I was watching TV and I was reading this meaning of life thing, and I think this is the meaning of my life,” Fallon said. “I belong on TV and I should be talking to people who are watching, who are either in an ICU or wherever you are, at home, or if anyone’s suffering at all — this is my job.
