Cumberbatch and Sherlock to return for 4th season.

U.S. fans of the acclaimed Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman series Sherlock have much reason to celebrate, and not only because the trailer for the Victorian Era-set Sherlock: The Abominable Bride has been released. The 90-minute show will be set in the Victorian era and had been shrouded in mystery until the announcement was made at London’s ComicCon event on Saturday. This is the first time a new chapter of “Sherlock” will air in both countries on the same day, after years of American fans complaining about the delay.

For years, American Sherlock devotees have had to accept the lag that came after the U.K. premiere, waiting long months for the episodes to make it to stateside. It was also announced Saturday that “Sherlock’s” fourth season will begin production in the spring, with creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss currently writing the new episodes.

Sherlock won seven Emmy Awards in 2014 for the episode “His Last Vow,” including acting trophies for both Cumberbatch and Freeman. “His Last Vow” premiered on January 12, 2014 in the U.K., and there haven’t been any new episodes since. The 90-minute special finds the pair in 1890s London, with Amanda Abbington, Rupert Graves and Una Stubbs also starring. “The special is its own thing,” Moffat said. “We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special.
