Actor Depardieu banned from Ukraine for stance on Russia.

The Ukrainian Security Service, the country’s main successor agency to the KGB, said the 66-year old French film star had been added to a blacklist of public figures considered hostile to Ukraine in its on-going confrontation with Russia.PARIS– French actor Gerard Depardieu, who was granted a Russian passport from Vladimir Putin in Jan. 2013, has been banned from entering Ukraine for five years.

She did not cite any specific comments by Mr Depardieu, who starred in films including Cyrano de Bergerac and Green Card and is notorious for alcohol-fuelled off-screen antics including drink-driving and urinating in the aisle of an aeroplane. The ban, ordered by the country’s culture minister Ivan Kirilenko and proclaimed by the national secret services, reportedly sanctions Depardieu for making public comments suggesting that he supported Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014.

Earlier this month Ivan Kirilenko, Ukraine’s culture minister, said Mr Depardieu had been included on a list of 117 artists and entertainers who had publicly supported “the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.” Mr Depardieu received his Russian passport during a meeting with Mr Putin in Sochi and was subsequently offered a home by the regional government of Mordovia, a Russian region best known for an extensive network of Stalin-era prison colonies. Last week, Depardieu was photographed receiving a hand-scything lesson from Alexander Lukashenko, the president of Belarus, an ally of Moscow who is popularly described as Europe’s last dictator. The actor has however demonstrated his attachment to Russia throughout the years and routinely defends Russia’s international policies in the media. His latest movie, Guillaume Nicloux’s “Valley of Love” world premiered in competition at Cannes, and he has been cast to topline “Marseille,” Netflix’s first French-language original drama series.
