‘Possible gunman’ shuts down U2 concert in Stockholm.

STOCKHOLM: A U2 concert at Stockholm’s Globe Arena was cancelled Sunday evening after a gunman was believed to be in the crowd, according to police and media reports.STOCKHOLM (AP) — U2 canceled a concert in Sweden’s capital after a security breach and police were investigating on Monday whether one of their own was to blame. The arena, the biggest spherical building in the world, was evacuated and thousands of fans were held outside for several hours after the show was called off just before its 8.15pm Sunday (2.15am Monday Malaysia) start time.

Police declined to comment on Swedish media reports suggesting the incident was triggered by an off-duty police officer wrongly being allowed to enter the venue with a gun. According to Stockholm Police spokesman Kjell Nildgren, authorities responded when organizers reported that security personnel at the venue may not have performed security checks “in the proper way,” he told the Associated Press.

This led to the decision “to stop the entrance for spectators and get the people out that had come inside in order to search the area.” Nildgren added that police were “investigating a crime against Swedish weapon laws” but that no suspicious activity had been discovered yet. According to daily Aftonbladet, security guards had let a man carrying a firearm enter the building, who claimed he was an off-duty policeman. “I forgot to leave it at work,” he was quoted as saying by the paper. “We waited for three hours without knowing anything. In a post announcing the rescheduled concert, U2 assured fans that “audience safety is paramount” and confirmed that all tickets for Sunday’s show will be honored Tuesday. “The organizers apologize for the inconvenience caused and thank the audience for their understanding. We were told there was a problem with the metal detectors but that everything would be resolved soon,” Sofia Hartz, who drove five hours from southern Sweden to see Bono and the band, told AFP.
