Joy Behar Pisses Off Nurses, Offers Non-Apology.

The View found itself in hot water after Joy Behar made controversial comments about nurses on-air earlier this week, and the American Nurses Association has spoken up – and the comedian has apologized. “Each and every day, the nation’s 3.4 million registered nurses provide expert, high-quality and compassionate care, as well as dedicated leadership from the bedside to the boardroom,” reads a Wednesday statement from ANA President Pamela F.Kelley Johnson got the attention of host Michelle Collins donning her purple nursing scrubs Sunday, but Collins noted she “shockingly” placed second at the Miss America pageant. “But then there was a girl who wrote her own monologue and I was like ‘turn the volume up, this is going be amazing, let’s listen,” Collins explained to her fellow panelists. “She came out in a nurse’s uniform and basically read her emails out loud and shockingly did not win.” Those comments enraged health care workers with the hashtags #NursesUnite and #RespectNurses circulating on social media, but Joy Behar’s remark on the 22-year-old’s medical accessory took the brunt of their anger. After The View’s Joy Behar voiced offhand bewilderment as to why nurse and Miss America contestant Kelley Johnson was wearing a “doctor’s stethoscope,” nurses were understandably rustled.

On today’s episode Behar went on to dig that hole a little deeper saying she wasn’t trying to be funny (good, because nobody is laughing) and that she merely “wasn’t paying attention.” “Let me speak for myself. Nikki Ferrell, former Bachelor Juan Pablo Galavis’ ex-girlfriend, took to social media to express her own disapproval of the comments made by The View co-host. “If @TheView issues an apology tomorrow can you let me know? Apparently I was just not paying attention,” Behar said. “I was looking at a Miss America tape and there’s a woman wearing like an outfit with a stethoscope, and I’m thinking, ‘Is she in costume?’ I didn’t know she was a nurse. The country’s nurses are pushing back against “The View” and the hosts who denigrated the work of nurses generally and Miss Colorado, Kelley Johnson, in particular. I have to work, & it airs around the time I’m usually using my stethoscope,” the reality star, who works as a nurse, tweeted Tuesday, before Behar addressed the controversy Wednesday.

Collins found Johnson’s bit “hilarious.” Under the hashtag “#nursesunite” a typical comment directed at the show and the host (@TheView @JoyVBehar) read, “I save lives. Behar, a blogger who goes by the name Kateri, and who is also a registered nurse, said the comment is “an insult grounded in ignorance.” “A woman in a beauty pageant put on baggy clothes and walked on stage to talk about her job, and all that a woman who is paid to sit at a table and gab could come up with was insults,” Kateri wrote. “That wasn’t a sad moment for nurses. This is what we call a “not-pology.” We’re all happy how much you love nurses and that you can admit when you aren’t paying attention, but I think we were all expecting a little more here. The most inattentive thing about this is your lack of recognition of the reason why you made so many undervalued people feel even less valued. “Hey Joy and ladies of The View! I love the physicians I work with, & I have the utmost respect for them, but it is often the NURSE you meet first and the NURSE that is the one responsible for your care.

You owe all of the nurses of this world an apology [sic].” When you make tone-deaf comments about people who already receive less respect than they deserve, it of course matters what you intended. But if you actually want to show support for the group you unintentionally threw under the bus, it wouldn’t be a bad start to actually address how your comment was “misconstrued.”
