(AP Photo/Danny Johnston, File) (Danny Johnston) LITTLE ROCK, Ark.The 2006 police report unearthed by In Touch this week, in which now 27-year-old Josh Duggar was accused of molesting underage girls in 2002 and 2003, states that it was a fax from Oprah Winfrey-owned Harpo Studios that tipped local authorities off to a possible crime having been committed.Since Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar invited cameras into their lives in 2008, viewers have seen the TLC stars through courtships, new additions and no shortage of controversy.

In a statement, the channel said it was “deeply saddened and troubled by this heartbreaking situation, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and victims at this difficult time.” The statement didn’t elaborate. His own father, Jim Bob, turned him into Arkansas police in 2006 after he caught his son leaving a young girl’s bedroom and “learned something inappropriate happened,” a source told In Touch. “No one needs to defend Josh’s actions as a teenager, but the fact that he confessed his sins to those he harmed, sought help, and has gone forward to live a responsible and circumspect life as an adult is testament to his family’s authenticity and humility,” Huckabee wrote. Also Friday, Arkansas police said they had destroyed a record outlining a nearly decade-old investigation into Duggar, a day after the 27-year-old resigned his role with a prominent conservative Christian group amid reports about the allegations. According to the police report, after Jim Bob Duggar reported the alleged abuse in 2006, Josh was investigated for sexual assault in the fourth degree.

On Thursday, Jill – who is married to Derick Dillard and recently gave birth to her baby boy Israel David – posted a picture of herself and Jessa smiling at their home. ‘So glad to spend the day with my sista!’ she wrote, while many fans filled the comments section with sympathetic messages for the girls dealing with the scandal. But then the boy next door sneaks into the shed and borrows your new bike; he stunt-rides it up and down the back alley. “On Christmas morning your parents lead you out to the shed to reveal the special gift they bought for you, and as they open the door and say, ‘Surprise!’ they’re just as surprised as you are. It is an undeniably difficult time for the younger members of the family, as it was revealed that Josh’s secret past has been well-known among many of the family members. ‘Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret. I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life.” He also stated, “I would do anything to go back to those teen years and take different actions. The report, originally published by tabloid In Touch Weekly, states that a member of Harpo Studios, the producer of Oprah Winfrey’s then show, received an email containing the allegations before the family was set to appear in 2006.

That dark and difficult time caused us to seek God like never before.’ Their statement continues, ‘Even though we would never choose to go through something so terrible, each one of our family members drew closer to God. ‘ After a few more sentences thanking religion in their lives and admitting they are not perfect, they end; ‘We hope somehow the story of our journey – the good times and the difficult times – cause you to see the kindness of God and learn that He can bring you through anything.’ Most surprising of the statement released on Thursday was that from his pregnant wife Anna, currently expecting the couple’s fourth child, who claimed she felt ‘shock’ when she first found out. ‘I was surprised at his openness and humility and at the same time didn’t know why he was sharing it. It looks worse than something you would have bought at a garage sale. “I’m sure you would still be grateful for the bike, and you would have fun riding it, but it won’t be in the condition your parents had hoped and dreamed it would be when you received it. I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation.” “We spoke with the authorities where I confessed my wrongdoing and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling,” he added. “I sought forgiveness from those I had wronged and asked Christ to forgive me and come into my life.

The expanding Duggar family has fueled the conversation about high-risk pregnancies and whether or not there’s a such thing as having too many children. Zimmerman didn’t return a request for comment on Friday. “The judge ordered us yesterday to expunge that record,” Lewis said, adding that similar records are typically kept indefinitely. “As far as the Springdale Police Department is concerned this report doesn’t exist.” Several Arkansas Republicans have rallied behind the Duggar family, which is still engaged in state politics.

Daughter Josie weighed just 1 lb., 6 oz., at birth because Michelle suffered a rare condition during pregnancy that causes high blood pressure. “Every child deserves to be excited they are a part of life,” Michelle said in 2011 after revealing she was pregnant with her 20th child, the late Jubilee, at 45 years old, following Josie’s premature birth. She and his parents also issued statements in wake of the scandal. “At that point and over the next two years, Josh shared how the counseling he received changed his life as he continued to do what he was taught,” she said. “And when you, our sweet fans, first met me when Josh asked me to marry him…I was able to say, ‘Yes’ knowing who Josh really is—someone who had gone down a wrong path and had humbled himself before God and those whom he had offended.” But hearing this story now, knowing that Duggar son Josh has apologized amid allegations that he molested several young girls as a minor, is especially sickening. “Another story Jim Bob shares starts with a disgusting image: ‘What if we were at a meeting with about one hundred other people and the speaker asked that a large cup be passed around and that everyone spit in the cup? Josh and Anna Duggar Tweeted their support for the controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which allows individuals and corporations to act on their religious convictions without repercussion from the government.

In their book Growing Up Duggar, the family’s four eldest daughters – Jana, Jill, Jessa and Jinger – shed light on their secret to finding true love: courtship. Detailing the difference between dating and courtship, they wrote, “We want to get acquainted with a young man in a normal family setting, where we’ll be watching how he treats our brothers and sisters.” The family’s specific style of finding that special somebody calls for equally specific rules – including this biggie: No hand-holding until engagement and no kissing until marriage. Where you are no longer as good as anybody else?” A teacher had likened women to chewed pieces of gum, and the image stuck with her. “I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m that chewed up piece of gum, nobody re-chews a piece of gum. When all sexuality is a sin, when even holding hands is off limits, there isn’t a clear line between permissible, healthy forms of exploration and acts that are impermissible to anyone, not just the particularly devout.

This gospel of shame and purity has the potential to be incredibly harmful because it does away with important lines. (Studies not only suggest that abstinence-only approaches to sex education do nothing to decrease the incidence of sexual behaviors, but also that they can make them riskier and that they deprive kids of the vocabulary they need to discuss when bad things happen.) Patheos blogger Libby Anne writes, “Handling child molestation as ‘sin’ rather than addressing the psychology behind it is a serious problem. Some sexual things are normal for a teen to do — say, masturbating — but other sexual things are not typical behavior — say, molesting children — and those things need to be addressed professionally rather than simply as ‘sin’ issues. Failing to do so places other children at risk.” (The whole post is worth a read.) Kay Steiger at ThinkProgress also put it well: When you treat this as a sin instead of a crime, you let everyone down. “Such a message can leave children confused about what is actually harmful behavior and what is merely something of which his or her religion does not approve. There is also evidence that using accurate medical terms to educate children in an age-appropriate way can be effective at allowing children to report abuse when it happens to them.” The account of what happened and how it was handled — failing to report the incidents promptly to authorities?
