‘Supergirl’ Pilot Leak: Theft Or Marketing Ploy?.

A firm that tracks online piracy reports that high-quality copies of the new CBS drama were made available early Friday on file-sharing sites. Following the release of what became the most watched trailer of this past month’s upfronts, CBS was running on a major high to the fact that it may have finally grasped the millennial market in a way it’s typically not known for thanks to the help of Supergirl. As reported by Variety, the pilot for “” starring Melissa Benoist has leaked across the internet, and has already been downloaded over 100,000 times as of this writing.

Earlier today, TorrentFreak reported that the highly anticipated CBS pilot leaked on torrent sites after the groups DiMENSiON and LOL began a competition to see who could get the pilot out first. By the time most folks got to work on the East Coast, the pilot that stars Melissa Benoist as a budding superhero was downloaded more than 120,000 worldwide, according to Variety. Unfortunately, that excitement may now be short lived as many fans awoke this morning to find the pilot of the series had leaked online through a variety torrent sites in a high-def, 1080p format. From the producers behind Arrow and Flash, Supergirl focuses on Kara Zor-El (Benoist), who fled Krypton for Earth, where she’s been hiding her powers until, at 24, she decides it’s time to show her stuff.

What we knew from the trailer is we liked Melissa Benoist (Glee, Homeland) at Kara Zor-El and the idea that Supergirl would be fighting aliens while her other TV DC brethren took on supervillains seemed like it could be fun. That way, at least you can make some revenue off the show before everyone just goes and finds a pirated version at some point over the course of the coming weeks. In addition to “Supergirl,” the NBC comedy “Crowded” starring Carrie Preston and Patrick Warburton also leaked, which is somewhat random given that it does not have the same sort of pre-show buzz. But, as we can see from the reception of the show’s season finale earlier this week, if that release did anything, it’s help The Flash garner some much needed buzz to what was, at the time, serious speculation about its capability to be good based on set photos that had been released online weeks earlier. LOL beat DiMENSiON to debuting the Supergirl pilot by mere minutes, but LOL’s version looks to be a standard definition MP4 whereas DiMENSiON’s file is a whopping 6GB, 1080p HD file.

The damaging nature of a leak also comes down to its timing, and a leak six months ahead of schedule for a television series is not nearly as bad as one for a major blockbuster release such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Just a few months ago, HBO’s Game of Thrones saw its first four episodes of season five leaked from a press screener, which required the person who ripped it to blur out any identifying marks on screen. Most of these episodes are in the hands of Television Critics Association members anyway, but something this early and this clear has people wondering if it is a controlled leak having to do with the negative response to the trailer, or trying to capitalize on the appetite for superhero shows now that The Flash and Arrow have finished their seasons on The CW. The last time a pilot leaked this clearly and this far in advance was Fox’s 2008 sci-fi gamble Fringe, which saw a widespread leak of an uncompleted version in 2008.

The Fringe pilot ended up not being completed and going through a number of edits before actually debuting on the network, but as soon as the pilot leaked online, Fox strangely started polling for public opinion. But, the odds of the studio ever admitting that truth, should it be the case, is slim to none due to the consequences it would create for the industry in the long run.

You might recall in 2013 the failed NBC Wonder Woman pilot starring Adrianne Palicki was leaked online after it was finally declared dead from lack of network interest. I’m not saying series produced by Warner Bros. have leaky pilots — a lot of pilots leak every year — but when it comes to genre shows leaking super early and in high quality?
