First Behind the Scenes Footage from War for the Planet of the Apes.

Technically speaking, unless you’re unusually hairy, you probably wouldn’t get much of a choice – but if you’re leaning towards the simian option, you could be in luck. It’s going to be a while before we get to , but in the meantime director Matt Reeves has shared a first look at some behind-the-scenes footage from the movie. There was a lot of scepticism from fans surrounding a reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise back in 2011, but the series has so far exceeded expectations with Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Matt Reeves’ follow-up, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Considering the film doesn’t open until July 14, 2017, there’s not a lot to show, but we do get a look behind the scenes, with human soldiers, gunfire an explosion, and a little motion-capture work. While Reeves hasn’t released too many plot details about the new film, which is due for release in July 2017, the title suggests that we’ll definitely be seeing some sort of ape/human showdown – and in the new video Serkis describes it as “Caesar’s greatest battle yet”. Woody Harrelson and Steve Zahn are the new humans in the fold, with Andy Serkis and Judy Greer going mo-cap once again, in the tale that sees people and primate tension reach new heights.

And while plot details have been scarce so far, we’ll be following the journey of Caesar as he gains more power. “In the first movie, he sort of rises from humble beginnings to become a revolutionary, Dawn was very much about him ascending to become a leader in really difficult times and having to be tested in that way, but this next movie I think is about him becoming the seminal figure for ape history,” Reeves told Collider last year. “[It’s] like myth ascension, him becoming the ape Moses, for lack of a better sort of character to model him after. In War for the Planet if the Apes, a growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. To enter the contest, shoot a video of yourself doing your most life-like ape impersonation, and upload it to YouTube with the video description “This video was made for the #WarForTheApesContest.” Clips must be 30 seconds or less and submitted in English, with no branded gear in sight, and U.S. entrants are required to have a valid passport. He is very much that way of being sort of caught between these two worlds, and I think that’s gonna be exciting to see the ways in which we can push him to places that are gonna make him very uncomfortable.”

They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.
