Edit The new Game of Thrones Season 6 teaser is mainly Jon Snow.

Sometimes a teaser for a highly anticipated TV show or movie is just that: A tease. And on Thursday the network played with fans’ hopes once again, releasing a teaser that showed the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch standing regally, before quickly flashing to what appeared to be his bleeding corpse from the finale. But the scenes are overlaid with new dialogue that appears to be an exchange between Bran Stark, played by Isaac Hempstead Wright, and his new mentor, the Three-Eyed Raven – Max von Sydow.

Jon (Kit Harington) can be seen standing in his Lord Commander garb in the teaser, his long hair blowing in the wind as he stares ahead, looking worried – reminiscent of footage from his exit from the battle with the White Walkers, featured in season five episode Hardhome. ‘We watch. A rapid montage of some of GoT’s most shocking scenes then appears, including Catelyn’s throat being cut at the Red Wedding, Ned Stark being beheaded, Joffrey’s death and Jaime Lannister having his hand chopped off. After the viewers are informed that the past has already been written, Brian Stark’s (Isaac Hempstead Wright) voice comes on to say that “they have no idea what’s going to happen” — and for the teaser’s purposes, “they” presumably means “us.” After a brief montage of death, the 40-second video mostly features Jon Snow (Kit Harington), who (SPOILER!) died last season. The character last appeared in the fourth series, when he journeyed beyond the Wall to the Three-Eyed Raven’s cave to learn how to use his powers, following the plot of George R.R.

However, as the Three Eyed Raven says ‘the ink is dry,’ the video’s pace quickly changes and it cuts to a shot of Jon being brutally stabbed, calling back to the devastating season five finale. The unforgettable moment is followed by flashbacks to the deaths of Ned (Sean Bean), Catelyn (Michelle Fairley), and Robb Stark (Richard Madden), as well as when Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) goes blind.

The show is coming off one of its most critically acclaimed seasons in which in swept the Emmys with wins in writing, directing, drama series and best supporting actor for Peter Dinklage. The brief teaser has reignited the debate about Jon Snow on Twitter, with many GoT fans taking it as confirmation of speculation that the character will return.

Her fate was left in the balance – along with Reek’s, originally Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) – when fans last saw her, as she tried to jump to freedom from Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon). There’s also a glimpse at Cersei’s (Lena Headey) most vulnerable moment, the horrible Walk of Shame she had to make after being shaved bald and stripped in front of an angry mob. Weiss and David Benioff to create the remaining seasons based on the outline he has for the novels, fans of course have not had the opportunity to follow along with the material as they have before. The clip ends with Bran with warg eyes, before large, bold silver letters reading: ‘Spring’ flash upon the screen, referencing the highly anticipated return of the series. That is the last word he says in the books, and at an the Oxford Union talk in March, Kit had said that he would like to be a warg. ‘I’d like to be a warg.

After numerous blows and utterances of ‘for the watch,’ the fifth season of Game Of Thrones ended with Jon lying – apparently dead – in the blood-stained snow. Everything I’ve seen, heard and read, Snow is dead.’ And while chatting on Absolute Radio breakfast show, co-star Maisie said: ‘All the time people are asking me if Jon Snow is alive and the answer is no!

I promise.’ But then in September the 28-year-old actor was spotted on set in Belfast, with Jon Snow looking very much alive as he stood tall in Stark clothes with his sword on his hip while filming on the remote Northern Ireland hilltop. Spotted nearby as he filmed was a woman who could have been Carice van Houten, who plays The Red Witch Lady Melisandre – who many fans have theorized will bring Jon Snow back to life following his brutal stabbing.
