U2 honors victims of Paris attacks with guest performer Patti Smith.

The band returned to the French capital on Saturday night to play the first of two shows which had to be postponed following the terrorist attacks on November 13. ‘Every man has two cities he needs to be. The show, which took place at AccorHotels Arena, featured a touching tribute to the 130 people killed in the coordinated assaults, and a guest spot from Patti Smith. The one he can touch and the one he can’t see/The one where a stranger’s a friend/Every man’s got one city of liberty/For me it’s Paris/I love it/Every time I get lost down these ancient streets, I find myself again/You’re free, baby, baby, free now and for ever/It’s Christmas time, you can decide to forget or to remember/You’re free, baby, baby/I didn’t come here to fight you/I came down these streets of love and pride to surrender/The streets of surrender.’ The band were also forced to deny reports that Eagles Of Death Metal, whose gig at the Bataclan was the target of one of the attacks, would be joining them on stage.

Names of attack victims were projected on a huge video screen as the four-piece performed in the AccorHotels Arena in Bercy, on the east side of the city, not far from the site of the November 13 rampage. During the set, U2 displayed the victims’ names in blue, white, and red on a massive screen behind the band. “We stand together with the families who lost their loved ones in Paris,” Bono said, per the Irish Independent.

Bono wrapped himself in a French tricolour flag for the encore, in which he sang a verse from French crooner Jacques Brel’s Ne me quitte pas, or Don’t Leave Me. And bringing fans closer to the action, the band have already begun to tee up the anticipated December 7 performance by asking them to post questions on social media which they will answer before the show. In an interview with the Associated Press he said, “These are our people and they’re very familiar faces, the people in the audience, they’re our people.
