From the toughest of rappers to the most Teflon of pop stars, social media has become not only a promotional tool but also an art form in and of itself, with Twitter messages and Instagram poses often garnering more engagement and landing with more impact than the records they’re ostensibly advertising. Occupying the trending topic list on Twitter in recent days (and spilling over onto YouTube and Instagram) were a trio of polemics and feuds featuring some of music’s boldest names — including , Taylor Swift, Meek Mill and Drake — addressing issues never far from the industry’s mind (influence, race, authorship).

Depending on one’s stature and propensity for beef — although the range of responses were not always intuitive — there seemed to be three options for those getting called out: engage, apologize or ignore altogether. Minaj took exception that her “Anaconda” visuals were not nominated for Video of the Year, despite the video’s sly politics and meme-ability, she made a structural critique of the industry: When the “other” girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination.
