Idris Elba, Taylor Swift among chairs for Met Gala in May.

Next year’s Met Gala theme will be “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” where hand-made and machine-made couture will collide, Vogue announced Tuesday. The spring exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute will focus on technology’s impact on fashion, and the May 2 gala benefiting the institute will be co-chaired by Idris Elba, Apple’s chief design officer and a designer himself, Jonathan Ive, Taylor Swift and Anna Wintour. Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton explained that these days it’s hard to tell the difference between handmade couture and ready to wear (or machine-made) garments, thanks to the wonders of technology. “This distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other,” he said in the announcement.

Honorary chairs will be Nicolas Ghesquiere, the French fashion designer and creative director at Louis Vuitton, and fellow designers Karl Lagerfeld and Miuccia Prada. The exhibit will highlight more than 100 pieces and combine handmade techniques, such as embroidery and pleating, along with Silicon Valley contradictions of laser-cutting and circular knitting, reported Vogue. “In process” workshops will also show museum goers how the designs are made. It will explore the influence of the invention of the sewing machine in the 19th century, bringing on distinctions between machine-made and handmade at the onset of mass production. Among the designers whose work will be included: Christopher Bailey, Alber Elbaz, John Galliano, Marc Jacobs, Paco Rabanne, Pierre Cardin, Noa Raviv and Alexander Wang, in addition to Ghesquiere, Lagerfeld and Prada.

Swift was a guest at last year’s festivities, along with Robert Pattinson and FKA Twigs, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Beyonce and Jay Z, Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, and George Clooney, to name just a few. It was also announced that actor Idris Elba, Apple’s Jonathan Ive and squad superstar, Taylor Swift, will co-chair the event alongside Vogue Editor in Chief, Anna Wintour.

As Wintour pointed out in a video showcasing her 2016 Spring collection highlights, one of the big messages from the Paris shows was the “influence of technology on fashion,” particularly at Vuitton. And considering so many other high-fashion designers are getting into new technological ways, we found three hot-off-the-runway options for Swift to wear in May.

First, a swirl-print short ruched dress from Ghesquière’s Spring 2016 Louis Vuitton collection (which featured technology-focused, sci-fi-meets-real-life pieces). And the third option, a show-stopping high-shine netted piece from the Spring 2016 Iris van Herpen collection, which featured a robotic 3-D printed device creating a dress during the show, right in the middle of the runway!).
