So You Think You Can Dance Season 12 Crowns Its Winner: Was It Gaby Diaz …

And the Winner of ‘SYTYCD’ Season 12 Is….

And then there were four. “So You Think You Can Dance” concluded Season 12 on Monday (Sept. 14) with Gaby Diaz, Jaja Vankova, Virgil Gadson and Hailee Payne vying to go home the winner. Finally, a tapper, 19-year-old Team Stage contestant Gaby Diaz, won the title of “America’s Favorite Dancer” on Monday night’s grand finale. (She also won $250,000. She can buy a lot of tap shoes with that kind of money.) Making the plucky young tap dancer’s victory even more historical was the fact that she almost didn’t make it onto SYTYCD at all this year.

During this week’s finale show, Paula Abdul, Jason Derulo and Nigel Lythgoe will pick their favorite routines from this season, along with the top 4 favorites, and a special performance by Travis Wall and Jenna Dewan-Tatum. However, she refused to accept defeat and returned to give it another go at the Detroit auditions, heeding the judges’ critiques and retooling her solo to be less “busy.” The second time was the charm, and from that point on, Gaby was a frontrunner. And this week, her fancy footwork (in everything from tap to Bollywood) led her all the way to the winner’s circle, as she beat out Team Street’s Jaja Vankova and Virgil Gadson (who placed second and third, respectively) and fourth-placer Hailee Payne of Team Stage. Honestly, it was last week’s death-defying box routine, with all-star Zack Everhart, that probably sealed the deal for Gaby, if she didn’t already have the competition all locked up. This was truly the performance of a champion: To celebrate Gaby’s hard-won and historical triumph, below in chronological order are the rest of her routines of SYTYCD Season 12.

Cue music, enjoy… and hopefully this show will be renewed (Team Street captain Travis Wall just won a Best Choreography Emmy, so there’s hope) and the music will cue up again in Season 13. Though, before I begin getting into detail, I do have to say that I was right about all my predictions for this season so “Ha” for those who didn’t believe they would come true. In the words of Jason Derulo,” I would pay to see that number.” I was really hoping someone was going to pick this dance because it was one of my favorites this season as well. We see so many contemporary dances on this show, but Talia’s choreography is so fresh and there was something so raw about Megz’s performance in this number that just worked. I loved this routine the first time for two reasons: it showed a much softer side of Jaja, which she sold 100%, and Ricky shows us how mature his dancing has become in one short year.

However Paula had two favorite picks and for her second she went with Jaja, someone you can still honestly root for, and last season’s winner Ricky dancing their Broadway number. I think there is something about dancing knowing the pressure is off that makes you dance better, because Hailee looked stronger than ever in this dance. And, in addition to maybe spin-off, there was also nice moment between Twitch and Travis when they both chose as a favorite a dance belonging to the other team.
