‘SNL’: J.K. Simmons to host

D’Angelo Tapped for ‘Saturday Night Live’ Performance.

Credited to D’Angelo and The Vanguard, “Black Messiah” was the artist’s first in fourteen years and moved 117,000 copies in its opening week. Simmons has been giving us ‘Whiplash’ for decades now with head-turning performances in everything from ‘Spider-Man’ to ‘The Legend of Korra,’ but with the ‘Kong: Skull Island’ star finally nominated for an Oscar, that most hallowed of New York institutions will give Simmons his due. Simmons appeared briefly in an SNL sketch parodying Oz on a Jerry Seinfeld–hosted episode in 1999, but this’ll be the first substantial SNL appearance for all parties. Simmons just earned his first Oscar nomination for Whiplash, and D’Angelo just released Black Messiah, his first album in an extremely long time, but both performers have been part of the pop landscape for ages.

Interestingly, Simmons actually appeared on ‘SNL’ in 1999 as his HBO ‘Oz’ character Vernon Schillinger, guesting in a pre-taped segment that saw Jerry Seinfeld sent to the titular prison after the ‘Seinfeld’ series finale. Simmons, the veteran character actor whose career seems to be taking off thanks to his great performance in Whiplash, will host, which should be interesting. With Kevin Hart and Sia’s 2015 ‘SNL’ debut behind us, this coming Saturday will see ‘The Voice’ coach Blake Shelton pulling double duty, both making his Studio 8H debut as host, and acting as the musical guest. ‘Whiplash’ parodies not withstanding, what would you like to see from J.K.
