Showtime orders new seasons of ‘Homeland,’ ‘The Affair’

“Homeland,” which has won several Emmys and awards since debuting in 2011, received a SAG nomination Wednesday for an outstanding drama series, plus an outstanding female actor nod for Claire Danes. “Homeland” has come a long way since its early days as a cat-and-mouse psychodrama between Carrie Mathison, Clare Danes’s erratic C.I.A operative, and Sgt.The Affair too has two episodes left in its second season, which will wrap up with a supersized 70-minute episode on December 20, following the season finale of Homeland.
The Emmy-winning Homeland, which righted the ship creatively in Season 4 after a lackluster third season, has been a solid ratings performer, drawing a 2.4 million viewers in Live+3 for its most recent episode. The two shows, which are set to air their respective season finales on Dec. 20, are the top two rated currently airing scripted series on premium television. star was just nominated for the Screen Actors Guild’s Outstanding Performance by a Female Actress in a Drama Series for the fourth year in a row.
Homeland is set to wrap up season five at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20, with Carrie (Danes) and Saul (Mandy Patinkin) racing to stop a terrorist attack on Berlin after discovering a barely alive Quinn (Rupert Friend), who was tortured by the terrorists planning the attack. A special 70-minute edition of The Affair will follow at 10 p.m., which promises to answer plenty of long-held fan questions—including who killed Scotty Lockhart. Gansa was a writer and producer on series ranging from “24” to “Dawson’s Creek.” He was also one of many acclaimed TV creators who came through the “X-Files” shop in the 1990s (see also: Vince Gilligan, Frank Spotnitz, et. al).
