Cumberbatch and ‘Sherlock’ to return for 4th season.

The BBC and PBS Masterpiece just announced premiere dates for the UK and the U.S. debuts of the eagerly awaited Victorian special edition of the acclaimed detective drama. The BBC tweeted the good news on Saturday, revealing that they’re ‘thrilled to confirm that the #Sherlock special will air on@BBCOne on New Year’s Day! #221back’ . ‘Series 4 of #Sherlock will start shooting next spring.Fans of “Sherlock” set a reminder on your mobile device, Masterpiece and PBS have confirmed that the new “Sherlock” special is set to premiere on January 1, 2016. The modern-day update of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective stories stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as his stalwart companion, Dr. Steven Moffat and @Markgatiss are busy writing away right now,’ came the fourth tweet from the Beeb over a period of 20 minutes as they unveiled new artwork and the Christmas special title – The Abominable Bride.

This will be the first time that an episode of Steven Moffat’s popular show will air in both countries on the same day, similar to how they’ve handled the “Doctor Who” Christmas Specials. The show’s two heroes were also on hand to help unveil the images at the MCM Comic Con in London including one of a pensive Sherlock playing the violin, which the Cumberbitches are sure to love. Since “Sherlock” first aired in 2010, Cumberbatch has become a global star, Academy Award-nominated for “The Imitation Game.” Freeman has starred in “The Hobbit” movie saga and in TV’s “Fargo.” The BBC in Britain and PBS’ ”Masterpiece” in the United States have also announced they will broadcast a 90-minute “Sherlock” special episode on Jan. 1.

The announcements arrived during the Sherlock London Comic Con where Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat, Sue Vertue, and Amanda Abbington gathered to answer the audiences burning questions about the special and the highly anticipated season 4. Sherlock also used to have wide gaps between its UK and U.S. air dates, but fan lobbying and widespread online piracy have considerably shrunk that window in recent years, and for the upcoming special the gap has basically been eliminated entirely.
