In the hours since, Lovato’s post has racked up nearly 1 million likes and thousands of comments from fans who are thrilled to see the longtime friends together again. The saucy songstress made that very clear in her impudent newly released single “Same Old Love” – in which she bashes an old lover and swears she won’t give him a second chance. The jaded track became available for download on iTunes late Wednesday night for fans who preordered Gomez’s “Revival” album, which is set to debut on Oct. 9. Not only are they both 23-year-old pop singers, but they also appeared on Barney and Friends as kids together and went on to become Disney childhood stars. (Lovato made it big with the channel’s original movie Camp Rock in 2008, and Gomez became a household name on the hit show Wizards of Waverly Place, which debuted in 2007.) Still, their friendship has weathered its share of ups and downs.

More than a year ago, Lovato unfollowed Gomez via social media, then hinted at a possible falling out on Watch What Happens Live in August 2014. “I plead the sixth if that’s in the game,” Lovato told Andy Cohen. “I think it’s just one of those things where people change and people grow apart.” During that same stint, Lovato played a round of “Shag, Marry, Kill” with the choices of her ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas, Gomez’s ex Justin Bieber, and X Factor judge Simon Cowell. “I’d kill Bieber. The new song’s spiteful lyrics led many to assume Gomez is singing about ex-boyfriend and fellow pop star Justin Bieber, who she broke up with early last year after an on-and-off three-year relationship. On Wednesday, Gomez posted a slew of gifs on her Twitter account, revealing the track list for the new album and just one day earlier, she stripped down in an Instagram photo for what appears to be the cover art. The stars seemed inseparable in the early years – Gomez told PEOPLE they loved to do “everything” together during a joint interview in 2009, and the duo also took PEOPLE’s BFF test. I’d kill Simon,” Lovato said at the time. “F–k, I’d kill Joe, too!” Erstwhile, Gomez has remained closer than ever to Taylor Swift, even appearing in her “Bad Blood” music video alongside the rest of the 1989 singer’s massive girl squad.

Bieber spoke about life since their relationship earlier this week to Australian radio hosts Kylie and Jackie O, confessing he has remained single since the split because he’s still trying to heal his broken heart. The connection appeared to sour in the next few years but picked back up by January 2014, when they were spotted grabbing dinner together after Gomez opened up about their friendship to E! Then, last month at the 2015 MTV VMAs, Swift and Gomez were caught by cameras reacting to Lovato’s sex-charged outdoor performance of “Cool for the Summer.” While Gomez cheered on Lovato throughout the performance, Swift whispered to her seatmate instead and watched the dominatrix-fueled live segment with a stunned expression.

In addition to singing his newest hits “What Do You Mean?” and “Where Are U Now,” Bieber showed off his new platinum blond hair and shorter haircut at the performance. Bieber dismissed the Selena wall art in an interview with an Australian radio station, saying, “I think that might be fake,” before adding, “it wasn’t me that did that.” Those new shimmering locks likely won’t be enough to win back the busy Gomez, however, especially as she focuses her energy on promoting her new album. She was going through things and I was so young and it was confusing,” Gomez said, explaining her reaction to Lovato’s struggle with sobriety in previous years. “I processed it saying, ‘OK, I don’t understand what she’s going through so I’m just going to do this.’ I don’t think it was fair, and I’m so happy that I have her back in my life now.” The ladies seemed to be on the same page when they linked up at the unite4:good and Variety’s unite4:humanity Gala, where they were both honored for their humanitarian efforts. One year later, Gomez reached out to Lovato via Twitter to wish her a happy birthday on Aug. 20, writing, “@ddlovato IM so grateful you were born. #nomatterwhat #forever #haveTHEbestbday.”

Earlier in the week, the pop star shared the album artwork for her upcoming LP, which features her stripped down from head-to-toe as she stares thoughtfully into the camera.
