Scribe’s question on my sexuality was humiliating: Tom Hardy.

Actor Tom Hardy has opened up about his awkward exchange with a reporter who quizzed him about his sexuality, insisting he felt the line of questioning was “rude.” The star was promoting new drama Legend at a recent press conference when a journalist from a Toronto LGBT publication called on Hardy to address reports about his “ambiguous” sexuality. However, he bristled when, in the midst of a press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival, a reporter from LGBT news outlet Daily Xtra asked if it’s “hard for celebrities to talk to the media about their sexuality.” Days after the Legend actor shut him down, he spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the uncomfortable exchange that went viral. “That really, really annoyed me. Hardy immediately responded, “What on earth are you on about?” as the reporter went on to note a 2008 interview with British gay lifestyle magazine Attitude, in which Hardy reportedly admitted to flings with men when he was younger. It was just the inelegance of being asked in a room full of people. […] Now I’m happy to have a conversation, a discussion, at a reasonable time about anything.

Tom was confused by the question, and when the journalist confirmed he was asking about the actor’s own sexuality, he simply asked “why?” – before moving swiftly on. Are you asking about my sexuality?” The flustered journalist said, “Sure,” to which Hardy fired back, “Why?” before giving a firm and final “thank you” to the reporter and moving on with the press conference. If he’d have said that to me in the street, I’d have said the same thing back: ‘I’m sorry, who the f— are you?’ And I appreciate that I could probably have more grace as a human being, but I’m just a bloke.

I ought to maybe come out of the closet, even though that’s a lie, to do the right thing.” Hardy added: “Or, if I say no, then I’m homophobic? Bless [the reporter] … but at the same time, it left me feeling like I have to do something about that … Whose business is it anyway, and isn’t that the point?”
