Actor Sam Shepard arrested for drunken driving in N.M..

Actor and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Sam Shepard (inset) was arrested Monday on suspicion of drunken driving after a Santa Fe restaurant’s security complained about a possibly intoxicated driver. The actor and Pulitzer-winning playwright was arrested for aggravated DUI outside a restaurant in Santa Fe, N.M., on Monday night after police were called in to check on a patron who seemed too impaired to be driving off on his own. Shepard, 71, told police that he had two tequila drinks and was planning to drive home, Santa Fe police Lieutenant Andrea Dobyns said Tuesday. ‘‘Our officer could smell alcohol on his breath, and he had bloodshot, watery eyes,’’ she said. Shepard won the Pulitzer Prize for his 1979 three-act play ‘‘Buried Child.’’ His film credits include ‘‘Baby Boom,’’ ‘‘Steel Magnolias,’’ ‘‘Black Hawk Down,’’ and ‘‘The Right Stuff.”

Shepard, who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for playing pilot Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff and is currently playing the patriarch of a family with gobs of secrets on Netflix’s Bloodline, has talked openly in the past about his battle with alcoholism. He was also arrested for DUI in 2009. “And prior to that I was sober for four years and then I relapsed,” Shepard told the Guardian in March 2010, referring to that previous DUI bust. “It’s a constant struggle. Underwood commemorated the milestone yesterday by sharing a photo from the 2005 finale on Instagram, writing, “I’m forever grateful to American Idol for changing my life.” Before Idol, Underwood was just a 21-year-old from Oklahoma with a dream. Then she captured the judges’ attention at her audition with her rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Later in the year, she wore an off-the-shoulder T-shirt to perform the national anthem at Game Four of the 2005 NBA Finals.

She confessed on stage, “This is my very first acceptance speech, so I made a list.” At the 2007 American Music Awards, Underwood continued to take the music world by storm, taking home three awards. The artist can be found these days supplementing her glamourous looks with hockey jerseys to support her hubby, Mike Fisher, and casual yet polished workout gear, which she happened to design herself!

No one will ever be able to really recapture the magic of Keanu Reeves’ performance as FBI agent Johnny Utah, who goes under cover to infiltrate a ring of bank-robbing surfers (or is the other way around?) led by Bodhi, played by a never-more-highlighted Patrick Swayze, in the original directed by future Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow. Australian cutie steps into Keanu’s shoes as the rookie agent who cozies up to Bodhi’s gang, with Édgar Ramírez taking on the equally iconic role of philosopher-criminal mastermind Bodhi.
