Ryan Gosling Completely Loses It During SNL Alien Abduction Sketch

‘SNL': Ryan Gosling laughs it up.

Ryan Gosling is a man of convictions. The Big Short star hosted this weekend’s SNL but he couldn’t help but crack up – also known as “breaking” – during a few of the weekly sketch show’s bits.

Purists may complain, but his giddy amusement recalled Harvey Korman’s unplanned fits of laughter on “The Carol Burnett Show,” some of the best-loved moments in variety history.Ryan Gosling hadn’t even finished his monologue before declaring his love for Canada, so for most of us Canadians watching Saturday Night Live last night, we hit the jackpot early. Case in point: Gosling, 35, couldn’t hold back his laughter during an alien abduction sketch in which cast member Kate McKinnon tells an extremely silly story about an abduction. (Spoiler alert: it involves peeing into a bucket and getting her “knockers” touched by gray aliens.) Gosling can be heard laughing half-way through the sketch, which causes the other cast members – Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong and Bobby Moynihan – to get the giggles. With references to tuques, hockey, beer and a cameo by Captain Canuck himself, former ‘SNL’ star Mike Myers, the Great White North was like the second star of the show and Gosling seemed fine to share the spotlight. The set-up was pretty simple: Gosling’s Scarecrow got lost while traveling from West Oz, and he ended up in the company of the Wiz cast in East Oz. “This Oz is not for you,” Kenan Thompson’s Cowardly Lion told Scarecrow after he performed a brief snippet of “If I Only Had a Brain.” “I didn’t think it would be, but now that I’m here it’s really great.

Gosling couldn’t contain himself during the funniest skit: Three small-town friends told the Pentagon about their close encounters with extraterrestrials. But for those not into Canadian stereotypes, the show was also an opportunity to see Gosling turn into a giggling mess in a bunch of sketches, and that was entertaining too. Gosling isn’t the first person to break on SNL – then-cast member Jimmy Fallon and Lindsay Lohan famously lost it during a Debbie Downer sketch about Disneyland in 2004. The show kicked off with a Christmas message from everybody’s favourite blowhard, Donald Trump (Taran Killam) and his wife Melania (Cecily Strong.) Trump announced that Santa was on his naughty list because he only worked one day a year and was always giving away gifts.

In a brief, impeccably acted digital short, Gosling and Vanessa Bayer play the new couple in the neighborhood, whose jovial presence at a holiday party takes on a more threatening cast when it’s implied that none other than St. Killam got a few laughs with his squinty, pouty Trump impression – but the real beauty of this cold open was that it ended only seconds after the first big joke bombed. It’s much better than where I’m from.” Scarecrow went on to explain how his friends disposed of the Wicked Witch, engendering goodwill from the East Oz group.

Gosling (clean shaven and wearing a navy blue blazer and pink tie, for all the ladies wondering) began his night with a Brooklyn shout out, but was interrupted by an audience member (Strong) who reminded him he was actually from Cornwall, Ont. Gosling, Strong, and Kate McKinnon played alien abductees talking about their experiences to NSA agents (Aidy Bryant, Bobby Moynihan.) While Gosling’s and Strong’s characters had eye-opening, mind-altering spiritual experiences with their aliens – McKinnon’s character (a chain smoker in high-waisted jeans) talked about how her aliens slapped her “knockers” and dropped her on the roof of a Long John Silver’s restaurant without any pants. The host stayed in character in a Christmas party sketch — it was filmed — as a strange dude (Gosling) who took over a neighborhood party with his demands to see Santa. Last night’s episode didn’t have a lot of weak spots, but the jail bait sketch with Bryant as an overly hormonal teen with a crush on her friend’s dad (Gosling) was one of them.

Not to say Bryant didn’t totally commit to the role (she hit a wall and belly-flopped onto a table) but the sketch has been done before, so it was just more predictable and felt a little long. While Gosling’s voice wasn’t too shabby, it was his dance moves that really reminded fans that this suave Hollywood A-lister used to be on The Mickey Mouse Club. The show mocked an online dating service for women who are willing to settle for anyone and spoofed the George Clooney-Danny DeVito Nespresso commercials. “Weekend Update” didn’t deliver the laughs, yet Gosling was amusing as the high-pitched Third Hand News Guy who promoted “Star Wars: The Four Jamaicans.” “SNL” is all about putting on a show.
