Rihanna Joins Cara Delevingne in Luc Besson’s Outlandish New Space Movie.

The director shared the news on his personal Instagram earlier today with the teasing caption: ‘RIHANNA is in VALERIAN!!!!! ….and she has a big part.’ Valerian, which is adapted from the graphic novel by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres, is based in the 28th century when ‘humanity discovered time travel.’ The film follows Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as agents Valerian and Laureline who, according to IMDb, ’embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe.’ The “Where Have You Been” crooner has been cast in Luc Besson’s forthcoming sci-fi thriller “Valerian,” and while her role is currently unknown, the director promises it’s significant. Her role isn’t specified, but Besson, the filmmaker behind “Lucy” and “The Professional,” made the announcement on his Instagram account and teased that the part was a big one.

The 27-year-old Barbadian beauty joins a star-studded cast that includes Clive Owen and Dane DeHaan, as well as British supermodel-turned-actress Cara Delevingne. It’s the latest high profile acting gig for Rihanna, who previously starred in “Battleship” in 2012 before landing a leading voice role for DreamWorks’ animated comedy “Home” earlier this year. Production begins in December — around the time when Rihanna is expected to release her eighth studio album, “Anti.” The singer says it’s an ode to her rebellious lifestyle, which often includes drinking, smoking and getting tattoos. The big-budget project has tapped three elite visual effects firms to help realize Besson’s vision of the future — Weta Digital, Industrial Light & Magic and Rodeo FX.

No word yet on who Rihanna will play in the $180 million budget film, but Besson also said at Comic-Con that, inspired by James Cameron’s Avatar, he threw his original script in the garbage and rewrote the movie with only five parts for humans, with the rest of the cast made up of alien species. Besson initially considered lensing in Bucharest because French movies shot in English like “Valerian” were not eligible for Gauls tax rebate schemes for local and international productions. So we don’t know if Rihanna will be playing human or extraterrestrial, but we do know that the last time Besson presented us with an alien singer, the results were out of this world. But the influential filmmaker broke grounds by getting the French government to draft a bill – now coined the Valerian amendement — allowing French pics made in English to access the 30% tax rebate.
