British comedian Ricky Gervais to host 2016 Golden Globes ceremony.

NBC has announced that Ricky Gervais will host the Golden Globe Awards for a fourth time in January. The news was announced in a tweet from @GoldenGlobes. which read simply “Pssst! #HesBack #GoldenGlobes.” It featured a darkened image of Gervais, which he retweeted within 30 minutes of it being posted. “We’re excited to have Ricky Gervais back to host the most enjoyable awards show of the season in his own inimitable way,” said NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt. “Disarming and surprising, Ricky is ready to honour — and send up — the best work of the year in film and television.Gervais, the creator of mockumentary “The Office,” brought his biting humour to the annual movie and television awards ceremony in Los Angeles for three consecutive years from 2010-2012. “His off-the-cuff wit and quirky charm will surely have the room and audiences around the world at the edge of their seats,” Lorenzo Soria, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, said in a statement. Fasten your seats belts.” The Office writer and star, who won three Golden Globes himself, spent some time in Toronto in May this year while filming his upcoming movie, Special Correspondents. That Gervais would take on the role again comes as somewhat of a surprise, given his public assertion on his blog that he’d told his agent “to never let me be persuaded to [host] again.” “It’s like a parachute jump,” the 54-year-old wrote in 2012. “You can only really enjoy it in retrospect when you realize you didn’t die and it was quite an amazing thing to do.” His barbed sense of humor had him aiming at not only familiar targets such as Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson.

Last week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that Chris Rock would host the Oscars this February — his second go-around in the role. Robert Downey Jr. was especially not pleased in 2011 when Gervais introduced the actor as being best known for his time at the Betty Ford Center and the Los Angeles County jail. “Aside from the fact that it’s been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I’d say the vibe of the show is pretty good so far, wouldn’t you?” Downey asked dryly when he got on stage.
