‘American Ninja Warrior’ finale up in ratings; ‘Dancing With the Stars’ premiere steady.

The popular ABC reality competition “Dancing With the Stars” returned on Sept. 14, with celebrity contestants such as Bindi Irwin doing particularly well during the season premiere. The first two primetime NFL games of the season and continued strong performances by reality staples “America’s Got Talent” and “American Ninja Warrior” helped lift NBC to an easy primetime ratings victory in key demos last week, putting an exclamation point on the network’s second consecutive 52-week season victory.

One week away from the start of the 2015-16 campaign, NBC took a victory lap on Tuesday for the full 2014-15 television season, as it’s poised to finish on top in adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and adults 18-34 while placing second to CBS in total viewers, according to Nielsen “most current” ratings through Sunday (51 weeks). That’s the dream scenario Bindi Irwin, the 17-year-old daughter and figurehead of the Irwin family wildlife and entertainment empire, has allegedly shared with New Idea – albeit via one of the magazine’s much-loved “inside sources”. According to the source, Dancing With the Stars contestant Bindi “really wants Hugh Jackman to play Steve” because “she thinks Hugh is just like her dad in many ways – loved, dependable and internationally renowned.” Bindi’s mother Terri, who runs the Australia Zoo business on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve in far north Queensland, as well as steering the media careers of both Bindi and 12-year-old son Robert, is reportedly in favour of the idea of making a biopic on the life of the man known around the world as the Crocodile Hunter.

Former Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter and his partner, Sharna Burgess, also received a score of 24 after they performed a cha-cha. “Braxton Family Values” star Tamar Braxton and her partner, Valentin Chmerkovskiy, were close behind with a score of 23 after performing a quickstep, as were “Big Time Rush” actor Carlos PenaVega and his celebrity partner, Witney Carson, with the same score for their performance of a jive. Next September 4 will mark the 10th anniversary of Irwin’s death from heart failure after being hit by a stingray barb while filming near Port Douglas. Crowe, who counted Irwin as a friend, reacted angrily to such talk, calling it “appalling” that he was being “accused of doing commerce over his grave … it absolutely disgusts me”. The Peacock also continues to be dominant in late-night, where “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers” have consistently won their timeslots. Bana had reportedly been approached by Irwin himself just months before his death, with the wildlife activist (and, some would say, tormenter) insisting that the star of Chopper should play him in any movie about him.

Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” wrapped its lowest-rated season to date with a 0.8/3 in 18-49 and 2.4 million viewers overall, up a tick week to week in 18-49 and up a big 75 percent (0.3) in 18-34. Fallon was the winner in young adults last week in his first head-to-head showdown with CBS’ “Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Under NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt, the network has been a big proponent of live and event programming, scoring big during the 2014-15 season with specials including “SNL 40” and “Peter Pan Live.” Its slate of such programs during the 2015-16 season is even deeper, and will include new variety series “Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris,” which bows tonight, live comedy “Undateable,” original movie “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors” and “The Wiz Live!” NBC closed summer strong, finishing No. 1 in 18-49 (or tied for No. 1) during each of the last 10 weeks — matching the network’s longest weekly winning streak in 12 years. John Stainton, who directed much of Irwin’s TV work and his 2002 feature film The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, was quoted in November 2006 as saying that Irwin had approached Bana at an industry event in Los Angeles in January of that year with a proposal. “Instead of being sad every day of my life [over his death], I’m going to revel in the times we had together and celebrate Dad’s life and make sure his legacy continues.”

Originals of CW’s “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” (0.5/2 in 18-49, 1.5 million viewers overall), “Whose Line Is It Anyway” (0.3/1 in 18-49, 1.1 million viewers overall) and “Significant Mother” (0.2/0 in 18-49, 0.5 million viewers overall) all matched last week’s repeat scores. The opening-week average NFL audience of 27.1 million is the largest in the 10-season run of “SNF” on NBC, pulling about 700,000 viewers ahead of 2011 (26.4 million). And overall, NBC had a string of six straight nights (Sept. 6-11) where it either won outright or tied for the 18-49 lead among the Big Four networks. Elsewhere last week, NBC’s comedy “The Carmichael Show” dipped in its third and final week (1.0/4 and 0.9/3 in 18-49 for its half-hours), but it fared well enough during its run to garner a second season from the network.

Former judge Len Goodman departed before this season, so the remaining judges on the show are former contestant Julianne Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli. The show has often aired on both Mondays and Tuesdays, but this year, the second episode will not always happen and the second show of the week will not always center on the results of the competition. Tonight’s episode will reportedly expand on the Sept. 14 episode, going behind the scenes to see what happened as the contestants prepared to make their debut. This 17% decline in the demo was trimmed to 10% in “live plus-3,” though, and the show should pick up even more DVR playback viewing with its third episode.

Singers have also often done well, and Carter’s former band, the Backstreet Boys, often performed dance routines on tour and in music videos, so learning steps isn’t a new task for him.
