Prince Harry Makes His Acting Debut (and He’s a Gardener!).

It has been quite a week for royal obsessives: Kate made her grand return to the public sphere, after a quiet summer on maternity leave—with a new hairstyle to boot. Kate—whose bangs appear to have been slightly revised from their earlier-in-the-week iterations—wore a bright blue Reiss coat to the event, and she looked relaxed and calm, whispering to William and laughing demonstratively (does anyone laugh as demonstratively as Kate while still managing to simultaneously look utterly cool and collected?). But the show was stolen, as it were, by the Cinnamon Prince himself, as the newly bearded Harry, in a blue suit, addressed the crowd, and also appeared in a pre-taped clip (up at the top of this post) that ran during the ceremony, in which Harry plays an 1823 gardener who doubts that rugby will “ever take off.” Though his screen time is unfortunately restricted to a mere few seconds (feel free to skip to 2:15, which is when he comes on), Harry acquits himself quite well!

He really commits to the raking, and on a scale from Wooden to Meryl Streep, he is at “Bartender with One Line on an ABC Family Show,” which is better than you might expect for a prince with no prior acting experience! According to rugby legend, the sport began in 1823 when a young student named William Webb Ellis decided to run with the ball while playing a version of football with his schoolmates. Harry’s guest appearance isn’t exactly random – he is the honorary president of England Rugby 2015 and, on Thursday, he attended the Rugby World Cup welcome party.

He has also been an active supporter of rugby and serves as the Vice Patron of the Rugby Football Union and is the Patron of RFU’s Injured Players Foundation, which supports injured players in England. Perhaps Harry got some acting tips for his appearance from ex-girlfriend Cressida Bonas, who was spotted partying with the prince and a group of pals for his 31st birthday on Wednesday. (Bonas is an actress and has been earning rave reviews for her appearances onstage in London.) Still, Harry’s cameo may never top the greatest royal acting bit – Queen Elizabeth’s appearance in the 2012 London Olympics’ opening ceremony alongside James Bond himself, Daniel Craig. Harry grew the beard during a summer trip to Africa and we wouldn’t be surprised if his lady friends like it as much as we do — the charming prince has been hanging out lately with both of his exes, Chelsy Davy and Cressida Bonas.
