FOX Orders ‘Shots Fired’Fox announced this afternoon it’s picking up a series order of Shots Fired, an event drama directed by veteran Gina Prince-Bythewood and co-written with her husband Reggie. The network Thursday announced that Sanaa Lathan (The Perfect Guy) will star in the 2016 event series, which examines “the dangerous aftermath of racially charged shootings in a small town in Tennessee.” Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights, The Secret Life of Bees) and Reggie Rock Bythewood (Beyond the Lights, Notorious) will serve as executive producers, along with Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo. “Gina and Reggie have crafted a profoundly moving portrayal of a timely and sensitive issue that pervades our culture at this very moment,” Fox Entertainment president David Madden said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “This is not only an important story to tell, but also an explosive mystery-thriller, and we couldn’t be in better hands both with the creative team behind this, along with the very talented Sanaa Lathan leading the cast.” According to Fox, Lathan will play “an expert investigator who digs into the cases, alongside a special prosecutor sent to the town by the Department of Justice. The pair must navigate the media attention, public debate and the social unrest that comes with such volatile cases, as they seek justice before the divided town erupts.” The show is being greenlit in the wake of a wave of troubling, poorly documented police killings, a phenomenon that has disproportionately affected young black boys and men. The deaths of men like Laquan McDonald, Michael Brown, and Freddie Gray have fuelled the rise of the Black Lives Matter activist movement and renewed calls for greater vigilance and gun control around the country.

First put in development Oct. 6, executives were already high on the first script and was rumored to have already ordered a series bible with an eye toward going to series and bypassing the traditional pilot stage. Shots Fired joins rookie live-action/animated hybrid comedy Son of Zorn on Fox’s 2016-17 schedule as the network will have additional holes to fill after stalwart American Idol wraps its run this season.
