Ex-Scientologist Leah Remini claims being critical of Tom Cruise ‘is being critical of Church itself’ in interview about life as a member.

She says in a clip released Monday that “being critical of Tom Cruise is being critical of Scientology itself.” The interview is scheduled to air Friday at 10 p.m.“The decision to leave is you’re giving up everything you have worked for your whole life,” the actress told ABC’s 20/20 in an interview airing Friday.Since 2013, there have been rumors that Leah Remini, former Scientologist and sitcom star, was considering going public with her grievances about the controversial church.

And now, with a “bold, brash, and bravely confessional” tell-all arriving in bookstores next week, Remini will air her complaints and criticisms of Scientology on network television. “As time goes on, you start to lose touch with the real world,” Remini tells ABC News’ Dan Harris, in a 20/20 interview that airs this Friday. “The mindset becomes ‘Us against them. . . . Remini had reportedly climbed the echelons of the Church, eventually reaching the third highest spiritual level, ‘Operation Thetan Leval Five’, before her departure. Remini spoke to ABC 20/20 for an exclusive interview about her alleged experiences within the notoriously secretive and litigious Church, an excerpt of which has been released in a trailer for the network.

Two years ago, Remini told Ellen DeGeneres about her history with the organization. “My mother got involved when we were very young, so it’s all we really ever knew,” she explained. “But over time, my eyes opened and I could no longer be affiliated with the organization.” In a 2014 investigative report, Vanity Fair’s Ned Zeman wrote that Remini started raising questions with the organization after the mysterious disappearance of Shelly Miscavige, Scientology’s longtime First Lady. Every time she inquired about Shelly, “she got the runaround,” a source says. “They’d say, ‘Oh, she’s on a special project’ or ‘Oh, she’s visiting a sick relative.’ ” (Church spokespersons have repeatedly denied that Shelly is missing.) Finally Remini quit the church and filed a missing-persons report.

The L.A.P.D. soon announced that the case had been closed, and ruled the missing-persons report as “unfounded.” It also said that it had met with Shelly, but gave no further information. Earlier this year the actress Carmen Llywelyn wrote an essay claiming she had been labelled a “suppressive person” and cut off from her ex-husband Jason Lee.
