One Direction Drop Surprise New Single “Drag Me Down”.

Out of nowhere earlier today, British boy band One Direction dropped a new single, “Drag Me Down”. Liam Payne did the honors of announcing the news in the middle of the night – which was hardly fair to fans just getting ready to go to sleep (who now probably won’t be able to sleep for days due to their exhilaration). The pop-rock track shifts the band’s sound from the softer folk of their last album, Four, back to the more upbeat, electronic heavy elements of their first two albums. “It’s the first song from the new album that we’ve been working very, very, very hard on,” member Liam Payne said in a video the band posted on Twitter following the tune’s release. “We can’t wait for you to hear it.” The track comes on the heels of former member Malik’s announcement that he had signed a solo contract to RCA Records. Immediately, Directioners let go of any semblance of chill they’d ever had, though the overjoyed reactions truly reached their peak on Friday morning, when those who’d slept through the news woke up to find their Twitter feeds amok with feelings, GIFs and all caps.

Right before tweeting a photo of himself signing the contract in front of a RCA sign, Malik confirmed that the launch of his solo career is why he had left the band. “I guess I never explained why I left,” he wrote. “It was for this moment to be given the opportunity to show you who I really am!” He ended his tweet with the hashtag “#realmusic.” Malik quit the band less than a week after exiting the tour due to “stress” back in March. The new track, which is already available on iTunes and Spotify, appears to be stealing some of Malik’s spotlight, as fans flooded to Twitter to share their excitement.

For most of the year, One Direction have been touring the world in support of Four, beginning the North American leg in early July with support from “I Love It” duo Icona Pop. Well that shift, friends, was the ripple effect of a billion teenage and tweenage souls struggling to withstand the force of a new One Direction single, a surprise One Direction single, the first One Direction single since Zayn Malik infamously departed the group. The song itself is more interesting than some of their previous singles, and it shows that even while still a boy band, the guys in One Direction can mature with their music.

The track features a moment that could have featured the popular electronic drop (which has become something of a staple in pop music, ever since electronic dance music experienced a resurgence in popularity), but the producers subbed in guitars for synths, keeping to the style that has made this grouping a household name around the world. Mad Max will roar back out of the apocalypse while Mad Men rides off into the sunset, rock’s Antichrist Superstar and hip-hop’s Yeezus will rise again.

Instead, the lyrics are mostly directed at an unwavering lover (?), who is consistently supportive (“All my life you stood by me when no one else was ever behind me,” etc.). The band has released an album every November for the past four years, and having a lead single come out a few months beforehand is right on track with a typical release schedule.

Don’t be surprised if the boys announce a full album within the coming month or if it ends up being another number one when it does hit store shelves.
