‘I ran from the red carpet to see the Pope’: Kerry Washington reveals she abandoned her own event to see Pontiff… as she stuns in patterned dress on The Late Show.

But Kerry Washington revealed she ran from the red carpet of her own function so she could steal a glimpse of Pope Francis in New York during her appearance on The Late Show on Friday. “It would be great to have somebody like Beyoncé on the show, because any time Beyoncé does anything, it makes the world stop, and I would just be happy,” Kerry said during a Sirius XM session with Entertainment Weekly editor Henry Goldblatt on Friday (25Sep15).The Scandal star looked gorgeous in the black sleeveless top and short floral skirt which showed off her toned legs as she stopped by AOL Builds to discuss the new season of Scandal and her anti-domestic violence work on Friday.

Despite being passionate about women’s empowerment and domestic violence issues for years, Scandal actress Kerry Washington had never heard of financial abuse – the tactics abusers use to keep victims feeling trapped, like restricting their access to credit cards or legal and financial support. “It turns out that 98 percent of all domestic violence cases involve financial abuse, so it’s a huge reason for why women stay in abusive relationships and why they go back after they leave,” Washington tells PEOPLE. “They feel they don’t have the tools to take care of themselves and their families.” When the Allstate Foundation approached Washington to design a purple purse to promote the issue in 2014, she didn’t quite understand the purse part – until it really clicked. “Abuse is hard to talk about, so we thought a purse is a beautiful object that can get the conversation started,” Washington says. “It is a symbol of a woman’s financial domain.” This is the second year Washington has designed a bag for the Allstate Foundation Purple Purse campaign. She told host Stephen Colbert she could not believe her luck when she discovered the holy man would be driving by a few streets away, and high-tailed it with a few desperate journalists in tow. The fifth season of the show premiered this week (beg21Sep15), and saw Olivia’s relationship with President Fitzgerald outed by former Vice President Sally Langston. “I think about her a lot, because the pace is so intense,” Kerry told Headline Global News. “When I’m not at work I’m still try to break down the episode, analyse it and arc it out. “Also to discover what the themes are for my character and discover what the trajectory is and figuring out what the underbelly emotionally is.

Last time we checked on Olivia Pope () and her band of gladiators, they were busily murdering randoms in order to take down Papa Pope (Joe Morton), aka Olivia’s deranged father. Clearly fearless of making sweeping statements, she said: ‘He’s my celebrity crush, Pope Francis, because he is so generous and such a revolutionary. Meanwhile, President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) was making out with Olivia, which is either disgusting or amazing depending on where you fall on Team Olitz. Kerry also heaped praise on Stephen’s fellow guest, Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, who had wowed the comedian by performing an unfathomable feat of conjuring involving a playing card he selected almost completely at random.

Scandal star Kerry also said that ‘every week i feel completely shocked about whats going on,’ in the show, and claimed a big cliffhanger was about to come up, though she of course would not share any details. But when it comes to reading scripts for upcoming episodes, she always makes sure she has some input when it’s needed. “Our writers are really open to feedback,” she explained. “We have such a great deal of respect for every word they write and also have a great respect for our understanding of the characters, so we don’t really come to heads.

However she did claim that she can always tell now when Judy Smith, the Alistair Campbell-esque fixer whom her character is based on, gets involved in a real life scandal. For the love of ShondaLand, what about Jake Ballard?!’ Give a warm welcome to Princess Emily of Caledonia (hi, made-up country!), who almost immediately died in a car accident while visiting D.C. with her royal family. Kerry raised Stephen’s eyebrows when he asked her if she does not find it worrying that a person can have that sort of power, replying, ‘For me it doesn’t frighten me ’cause shes my friend.’ Even more amusingly, she would not give Stephen any insight on her forthcoming HBO film Confirmation, which goes behind the scenes of the 1991 Clarence Thomas Supreme Court nomination hearings. She is playing Anita Hill, who accused the future judge of sexual harassment, and she refused to explain what behind shenanigans are exposed in the film, repeatedly saying he would have to watch the movie to find out the answers.

Yep, Princess Emily and her unborn child were killed because she was having an affair with the bodyguard. #drama Poor Mellie (Bellamy Young) was thrilled when Fitz showed up at her swearing in ceremony (she’s officially a senator!), but the twist? Apparently, he spent the hiatus sleeping on Olivia’s couch waiting for her to finish sexing Fitz, and spent most of this episode shaking and crying while Olivia was just like, “Yikes.” Luckily, Huck turned to Jake for help at the end of the episode, so hopefully he’ll regain what’s left of his sanity soon.
