Brace Yourselves, ‘Ready Player One’ Officially Has A Female Lead.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl star Olivia Cooke is ready to press start on Ready Player One, Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernest Cline’s retro-futuristic sci-fi novel. The 21-year-old British actress will play the female lead, Art3mis, in the near-future tale about an ’80s-themed treasure hunt set inside an advanced virtual-reality game. Spielberg is currently wrapping up production on the DreamWorks pic “The BFG,” but has tapped this as his next directing job and has been seeing actors and actresses for the past couple of weeks for the lead roles.

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow are behind the movie, which adapts the best-selling sci-fi novel by Ernie Cline, and is in the thick of searching for its stars. She was recently reported to be on a shortlist for the part that included Elle Fanning and Lola Kirke, and is also on the shortlist for Star Wars Episode VIII, along with Tatiana Maslany and Gina Rodriguez.

Warner Bros. will release the film Dec. 15, 2017. [The Hollywood Reporter] Patton Oswalt has logged in to James Ponsoldt’s The Circle, based on the Dave Eggers book about a young woman working at an Internet giant that links users’ email, social media, banking, and purchases with a universal operating system. The story is set in a virtual world called Oasis, in which a teenager finds himself competing in a treasure hunt against ruthless foes after the game’s founder dies and offers his fortune as the grand prize.

Cline’s novel, published in 2011, follows the rise of virtual reality universe the Oasis, which humans living in the not-too-distant future begin to value above the real world. Production is scheduled to start this month. [Deadline] Entourage star and deli man Jerry Ferrara has been added to the cast of Sully, the Clint Eastwood-directed biopic about the veteran pilot who safely landed a damaged passenger plane on the Hudson River in 2009. When the protagonist discovers to the hidden treasure locked within the game, he must protect himself from other players desperate to claim victory themselves, including the Canadian blogger and object of his affection, Sam, aka Art3mis. If a deal is made, Cooke would play the teen’s love interest and competitor, a Canadian blogger named Sam whose name in the virtual world is Art3mis. The role is major breakthrough for Cooke, a rising talent who’s been working mostly in the indie world, while also appearing on A&E’s Bates Motel.

She received a big career boost with Dying Girl, the indie that won the Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was picked up Fox Searchlight. Olivia Cooke, who has also been on the big screen in films like The Signal and Ouija, is also well-known for her leading role as Emma Decody on A&E’s “Bates Motel“. Directed by Zack Parker (Proxy), who co-wrote with Kevin Donner, the film is to tell the story of two men who are polar opposites but also connected by their mutual desire for change.
