Huckabee stands by Duggar family amid molestation scandal.

The Republican presidential hopeful defended the oldest “19 Kids and Counting” son Friday — a day after Duggar apologized and said “I acted inexcusably” following allegations he molested several girls when he was a teenager. “Effective immediately, TLC has pulled all episodes of 19 Kids and Counting currently from the air,” TLC officials told the Daily News Friday. “We are deeply saddened and troubled by this heartbreaking situation, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and victims at this difficult time.” “Josh’s actions when he was an underage teen are as he described them himself, ‘inexcusable,’ but that doesn’t mean ‘unforgivable,'” Huckabee wrote on Facebook. “Being a minor means that one’s judgment is not mature.” In Touch Weekly magazine obtained a police report detailing accusations that Duggar fondled the breasts and genitals of at least five girls, sometimes as they slept. Why were evangelical reality star and conservative political activist Josh Duggar’s parents Jim Bob and Michelle so slow to act on the revelation that their eldest son had molested his younger sisters—and, ultimately, so lenient?

His own father, Jim Bob, turned him into Arkansas police in 2006 after he caught his son leaving a young girl’s bedroom and “learned something inappropriate happened,” a source told In Touch. “No one needs to defend Josh’s actions as a teenager, but the fact that he confessed his sins to those he harmed, sought help, and has gone forward to live a responsible and circumspect life as an adult is testament to his family’s authenticity and humility,” Huckabee wrote. Documents about sexual abuse from the cult-like homeschooling program the family follows—which focus on public image and lay heavy blame on the victims of assault—may help answer the question.

Northeast mom Lisa Miller was the lucky winner, out of 5,000 participants, of the open to the public outdoor bash, which takes place at Penn’s Landing on May 30th. According to the police report, after Jim Bob Duggar reported the alleged abuse in 2006, Josh was investigated for sexual assault in the fourth degree. You see, the Duggars aren’t just “Quiverfull” breeders and Bible adherents—they’re also adherents of the Advanced Training Institute, a Bible-based homeschooling program run by alleged cult figurehead Bill Gothard. Duggar, now 27, is a star of the TLC program “19 Kids and Counting” and until Thursday was head of the lobbying arm of the anti-gay Family Research Council.

Months before the family had to deal with the revelation of Josh Duggar’s past sexual abuses, they were coping with sexual abuse allegations against Gothard. The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, which obtained the offense report before its destruction, reports Duggar was accused of fondling five girls in 2002 and 2003.

Gothard last year denied accusations that he had sexually harassed or assaulted 34(!) women, claiming “I have never kissed a girl nor have I touched a girl immorally or with sexual intent.” He was 79 years old at the time. The event still currently features such familiar TLC faces as Kate Gosselin, Buddy “Cake Boss” Valastro, Say Yes to the Dress’ Randy, and the Roloffs from Little People Big World have replaced the Duggars. A rep from the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, which manages Penn’s Landing, said the organization had no say or involvement in the star lineup for the event. Springdale Police began investigating Duggar in 2006 when officers were alerted to a letter containing the allegations that was found in a book lent by a family friend to someone else. The document also blames porn, advising families to “pray for protection from pornography.” According to Recovering Grace, ATI’s Counseling Seminar curriculum also includes a handout on “Counseling Sexual Abuse,” which examines the many ways that a victim could have brought abuse on him or herself by “defrauding” God: Did you dress immodestly?

Zimmerman didn’t return a request for comment on Friday. “The judge ordered us yesterday to expunge that record,” Lewis said, adding that similar records are typically kept indefinitely. “As far as the Springdale Police Department is concerned this report doesn’t exist.” Several Arkansas Republicans have rallied behind the Duggar family, which is still engaged in state politics. In 2008, he commuted the 108-year prison sentence of Maurice Clemmons, the man who in 2009 would assassinate four Lakewood, Wash., police officers as they sat in a coffee shop. The Clemmons pardon was one of 1,033 pardons and commutations issue while Huckabee was governor, more than the three previous governors (including Bill Clinton) combined. Only then does it move on to what to do “if” the abused was miraculously “not at fault.” That advice basically consists of saying “It could be worse. And if I have to choose, I’d rather have that than not be sexually abused!” It’s not certain that the Duggars came across either of these specific documents during their decades of ATI-approved homeschooling, but their association with Gothard’s institute is well-documented.
