#FlotusBars: Why is Michelle Obama rapping about college?.

Michelle Obama has dropped her first official rap video, teaming up with Saturday Night Live comedian Jay Pharoah to implore kids to “go to college”.That’s the theme of a new “CollegeHumor” video released Thursday, featuring rap verses from first lady Michelle Obama and “SNL” castmember Jay Pharoah. “South Side Chicago, we all know, we had to do overtime every night to make it tomorrow.

And she photobombed Miami Heat basketball players in the midst of a mock interview as she slam-dunked in the background to plug her Let’s Move! campaign. In the video, SNL’s Jay Pharoah pops up next to a picnic table brandishing textbooks, sprawls on top of it preaching to two (over)actors portraying aimless high school kids, and before you know it, the first lady is rapping along with him in front of the White House. It aims to help kids get a higher education, “whether at a professional training program, a community college, or a four-year college or university”. The initiative informs children of college opportunities, helps them understand financial aid and supports high school counsellors, according to its website. The video is designed to draw attention to the White House’s Better Make Room campaign, which encourages teens to excel in high school and attend college.

It’s part of a larger White House effort, Reach Higher, to address slipping US college graduation rates, by recognizing student success stories the same way celebrities and athletes are celebrated. “I want to honor and empower young people who are working hard in school and pursuing their dreams – and I want to do it in a fresh and fun way,” Obama said in a statement.
