How Residents in the Duggars’ Town Are Reacting to Josh’s Molestation Scandal: ‘People Are Super Embarassed’.

Last week, the entire country was fixated on one, and only one, issue: Whether the Duggar clan, who have more kids than they can count, have one kid they couldn’t exactly count on to do the right thing. Back in 2012, I watched the Republican presidential candidate campaign in Iowa alongside Jim Bob Duggar and several of his 19 kids — the celebrity Christian family behind the hit TLC series — en route to Santorum’s victory in the Iowa caucuses. The famously conservative Duggars seemed to be models of wholesome family life, but son Josh was hiding a dark past: He allegedly molested five young girls as a teen.He was imprisoned on child pornography charges in 2007 – just four years after he had failed to properly investigate his friend Jim Bob Duggar’s son Josh for molesting young girls in their sleep.

You know the Duggars — they’re everywhere, on TLC 10 times a week, on the “Today” show every couple of months when they have another baby, and on the cover of magazines at the supermarket checkout. Now, the sickening details of former Arksansas state trooper Joseph Hutchens’s offenses have emerged, including how he had pornographic photos of one of his own relatives on his camera. Thanks to their ridiculous procreation rate, there are now so many of them that next time you’re walking down the street, shout out: “Hey you, Duggar!” and I’ll bet at least one person will turn around and wave back. Santorum’s response contrasts dramatically with that of another 2016 contender, Mike Huckabee, who enjoyed the Duggars’ support in his 2008 bid but didn’t run in 2012.

I’m referring, of course, to “19 Kids and Counting,” which puts literate people in mind of a baby goat factory that under similarly procreative practices would prompt charges of animal cruelty. Many of the residents in Washington County, Arkansas, are reeling from a scandal that has put them – and their most famous residents – under a microscope. According to new explosive court documents, Hutchens operated a Yahoo adult profile using the handle ‘dadsluv2002′, on which he claimed to be interested in a number of disturbing categories. After the news broke (and Josh Duggar apologized), Huckabee posted a message on Facebook to “affirm” his support of the Duggars. “Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things,” he wrote, calling Josh Duggar’s response a “testament to his family’s authenticity and humility.” Why the divergence in opinion? There are few inside the Duggars’ county without an opinion about the explosive reveal that Michelle and Jim Bob’s eldest child Josh was investigated as a teen for the alleged molestation of five underage girls.

These included the child porn categories ‘Preschools’, ‘Kinki Kids’, ‘Child’s Play Series’, ‘Strangers With Candy’ and ‘Babyz’, and incest-themed ones like ‘Family Affairs’, Radar Online reported. They’ve also made it their business to tell anyone who will listen, and a good number of people like me who would prefer not to listen, how to run our lives. He visited the website hundreds of times, and admitted communicating with a woman, dubbed ‘Miss Understood’, whom he instructed to ‘role play that she was a little girl having sex with daddy’. Several candidates had sought the famous family’s favor, as evidenced by the photos (mostly from Josh Duggar’s Twitter stream) of Duggar with Huckabee, Santorum, Ted Cruz, Rick Perry, Rand Paul, Jeb Bush, Bobby Jindal and Scott Walker.

As far as they are concerned, the rest of us are spending eternity roasting marshmallows with Beelzebub, while they’re going to be up in heaven at an invitation-only Duggar Family Reunion Jamboree. Right, Josh is seen in February with his wife, Anna, who is pregnant with their fourth child On the site, he also listed his hobbies as ‘putting fat objects into small holes’, cited his favorite quote as ‘Everything I enjoy is either illegal, immoral or fattening’, and listed his marital status as ‘married’.

During 2004 and 2005 – when a police inquiry was launched into Hutchens’s behavior – he ‘spent considerable time on his computer viewing porn’, say other court documents, obtained by Jezebel. There are the “preachy” types, who want to dictate to everyone else how to live their lives, and the “preached at” types, who just want to be left the heck alone.

Nor do I take any delight in the discovery that the Duggars, who find immorality in homosexuality, abortion and out-of-wedlock sex, have more disturbing questions of morality in their own home. This despite the Duggars having raised their children by the book — home schooling, restricting access to entertainment, guiding courtships and advising that sex should await marriage, which, come to think of it, wouldn’t hurt a nation that seems to be in perpetual rut. He specifically focused on ‘prepubescent children’ engaging in sexual activity – and even admitted to police that he had pleasured himself over pornographic images of girls aged two, three, 12 and 13. The Duggars’ expectations were more or less the norm not so very long ago — and many would argue that the country would be better off if more parents were similarly engaged in their children’s lives. Carolyn Trammell, who lives two doors down from the Duggars in Tontitown, tells PEOPLE that the 19 Kids and Counting stars are a “nice family but kind of different.” “They’re homeschooled and don’t get out among other children,” she adds, noting that the neighbors are “concerned that the children didn’t get the attention and opportunities they should have gotten.” Trammell acknowledges that while the Duggars take trips – TLC aired a three-part special in November 2011 called “Duggars World Tour” – “if you’re not out in this world … there’s other education besides trips and homeschooling. [Michelle]’s having one baby after another.

As a card-carrying member of the preached at masses, I can tell you that there are plenty of people out there whom I can’t stand, and want to tell off, but I keep it to myself. The political issue is not what Josh Duggar did as a teenager but why so many who seek the nation’s highest office feel the need to woo people so far out on the ideological extreme.

Who’s teaching them?” During the holidays, Trammell adds, hers was the only one of the neighbors’ houses serenaded with Christmas carols by the Duggars. Other viewers most likely have been gawkers riveted by the spectacle of so much post-betrothal activity under one tent by just one couple — and the fact that no one in his or her right mind would wish 19 children on anyone. On the device, they found shocking images of a family friend’s young daughter – and one of Hutchens’s own relatives, which are thought to have then been posted online, Radar reported. ‘It is believed that this Digital Camera was used to take the pictures of the small children which we believe were posted on Joe Hutchens’ Yahoo account,’ investigator Chris Sparks said. The Duggars have been further differentiated from Mainstream America 2015 by being frequently associated with, and embraced by, the Quiverfull movement.

In January 2007, Hutchens pleaded guilty to eight felony counts of possessing visual or print medium depicting sexually explicit conduct involving a child, and was jailed for five years. They’d all pile in a van and go to Braum’s [a local ice cream parlor] just like a normal family. [While there], they’re not loud, not disrespectful.” However, he adds, Josh’s lobbying against LGBTQ rights in his former position at the Family Research Council feels hypocritical given what we know now: “I think he should be more sympathetic toward other people’s rights knowing he had made mistakes in the past.” Other Arkansas residents are concerned with how the scandal reflects on Christianity as a whole – the Duggars belong to a fundamentalist sect – with one Springdale resident confessing to PEOPLE, “If [Josh] did it, I wish he would admit to it. The disturbing new details come just days after it was reported that Hutchens had claimed Jim Bob had lied to him about his eldest son Josh’s actions when he brought him to speak to him in 2003. This might explain why Jim Bob went to church elders after his son confessed to child molestation and why he later sent Josh to see Arkansas State Trooper Joe Hutchens, who lectured him but took no action.

Into this perverse auto-da-fé have waltzed two Republican presidential candidates, Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum, presumptively the two most devout Christians among the — hey! — 19 likely Republican presidential candidates. There’s a lot of success here, a lot of growth here.” Another Fayetteville resident – a TV ad executive – doesn’t place the blame squarely on Josh. “I think it’s up to the parents to educate [their children] about something as intimate as sex,” he tells PEOPLE. “In a case such as Josh’s, authorities should have been alerted right away,” Gail Wyatt, Ph.D. and director of the University of California, Los Angeles, Sexual Health program, previously told PEOPLE. “The story will be submerged if the kid feels overwhelmed or blamed. But instead of admitting his son had inappropriately touched several girls over a year – as detailed in a 2006 police report released last week – Jim Bob said he had molested only one, he said. ‘Jim Bob explained to me that Josh inappropriately touched [a victim] while she was asleep,’ Hutchens said in an interview for InTouch Magazine. ‘He said it only happened one time.’ The prison inmate added: ‘Jim Bob sat down and Josh was crying. You need to get the story while it can be told,” she said, echoing what the residents of Washington County have also believed about the connection between Josh’s childhood isolation from his peers and the alleged acts of molestation. “The best thing to do is to tell the truth about it get help,” Wyatt said. “Teenagers who have been isolated from their peers may be more likely to act out sexually, the abuser is trying to make themselves feel better.

Last week, it was revealed that Jim Bob, 49, and Michelle, 47, informed some of the elders at their church about Josh’s actions in 2003, before sending their son away to a faith-based healing facility. Nationally, neither has a ghost of a chance of becoming president for the simple reason that Americans in increasing numbers find the convergence of religion and politics distasteful if not loathsome. Young people, who missed the Golden Age when most people didn’t talk about their religious beliefs or their politics — and never in combination — perceive that to be religious is to be politically conservative.

The embrace of other bizarre figures in the conservative movement has caused heartburn similar to the Josh Duggar scandal for GOP officeholders — such as when Ted Nugent called President Obama a “subhuman mongrel” and when anti-government Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy expressed racist sentiments. Speaking to InTouch Magazine, criminal defense attorney Carmen Roberto, of Ohio, said that Jim Bob’s alleged lies could be considered child endangerment, if Hutchens’s account is correct. To a party that tends to be skeptical toward Islam and draconian about immigration, separating politics from religion would seem to be an imperative of some urgency. The overwhelming majority of Christian conservatives are upstanding Americans and are neither racist nor believers in exotic notions of patriarchy and fertility. At the very least, Republicans wishing to become president might steer clear of religious grandstanding and avoid association with reality show stars whose single claim to fame is having more babies than anyone else.

It states that in March 2002, a girl came forward saying Josh ‘had been touching her breasts and genitals while she slept.’ A year later, ‘several’ more minors came forward to say that Josh had touched them, and the teen was sent away to the Basic Life Principles Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, for treatment. He was never charged with a crime for the incidents as by the time police learned of the offenses the statue of limitations had passed, and his parents did not notify authorities in an official capacity. Preachy types in our society always believe in swift justice, as long as the person swinging at the end of the rope isn’t them, or a close family member. So we sit there while we’re being preached at and nod our heads politely, as if we’re listening, and quietly wait for what goes around to, as it almost always, and most perfectly does, come around. So the Duggars, as a family, look as if they’re about to lose all their TV coverage and all of the lucrative endorsements and appearance fees that go with it.
