Authorities eye cause of death of Kristin Cavallari’s brother Michael.

EXCLUSIVE: Kristin Cavallari’s missing brother drove FIVE MILES down desert track in coyote country – then tried to turn back and got stuck in mud before abandoning car and vanishing Desolate and remote, this is the bleak stretch of desert into which the missing brother of reality star Kristin Cavallari drove his car before vanishing.

Pictured here, the road off which Michael Cavallari careened 13 days ago is, in truth, little more than a dirt track, deep in the Utah desert, some 60 miles from the nearest town. Police discovered what they believe is Cavallari’s body Thursday in a steep and rocky area in an isolated park in southern Utah, nearly two weeks after a rancher found his car abandoned near the area. Now Daily Mail Online has pieced together Cavallari’s drive from Monticello, where he was last seen at 3.30am, to this plot in the desert where a rancher discovered his abandoned vehicle – its engine still running – several hours later that morning.

And Grand County Sheriff Steven White, 46, has revealed his hope that somebody might have picked up the beleaguered Cavallari and driven him away from the area they are currently scouring for any signs of life. The remains were near the bottom of a steep hillside filled with boulders, about 3 miles northwest of where Cavallari’s car was discovered the morning of Nov. 27. He drove through the small town of Moab – population 5,000 – 60 miles south from where his car was found and the last civilization he would have seen on his journey that morning. He then kept driving straight, though the paved road runs out after less than two miles giving way to a rubble strewn dirt track along which his Honda Civic would have labored and on which restricted access signs are regularly posted. We kindly ask everyone please respect our privacy during our time of grieving.” Evidence shows the 2014 Honda Civic hit a couple of big rocks and washes, likely causing the air bag to deploy, White said.

Close to the highway cattle roam but further inland there is nothing but coyotes and the occasional antelope as the road heads towards Canyonlands National Park. He turned his car and was heading back towards the highway when, either distracted, asleep or drunk at the wheel, he missed a curve in the hazardous road and careered off the track, rumbling some 100 feet into the scrubland before nose-diving into a deep hole. His sister rose to fame in the mid-2000s when she appeared in the MTV reality series “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills.” She is married to Cutler, who starred at Vanderbilt and now plays for the Chicago Bears.

In an area where temperatures plummet below freezing at night, to as low as 24F, the ground was frozen that morning meaning he left no tracks when he left his vehicle. Sheriff White said: ‘We’re not sure if maybe he fell asleep or was distracted, if he was reading a map or something because you can see where he missed the curve and the tire tracks that ride straight out there. ‘There were no tracks from the vehicle so it’s pretty hard to track him but we’re looking at how old tracks are, that kind of thing. We have a vague description of the type of shoe we think he had on so we’re trying to use that moving forward.’ Thirty officers are involved in the painstaking search that now sees them re-searching an area of two square miles, desperately hoping to find some clue so far overlooked. The harshness of the environment into which Cavallari may have wandered or fled – Cavallari already had a record of DUIs and, if drunk, may have feared another – is chilling. Among the many challenges facing law enforcement trying to make sense of the evidence they have so far – a running car, its airbags deployed, laptop and phone left behind – is the fact that they are unclear as to Cavallari’s state of mind at the time of his crash.

Dennis’ one-acre property, which sits just five blocks from the beach in picturesque coastal town San Clemente, has guesthouses on site that he rents out. The neighbor, who asked not to be named said: ‘Michael would come over early in the morning, around 7am, and ask me if I wanted to drink a beer with him, which was a little odd. ‘When I refused he’d get mad. Other neighbors on the street recall an incident earlier this year in the early hours of the morning during which Michael and his girlfriend were heard screaming at each other during a blazing row. ‘The tenants complained to him and to his dad but it didn’t stop. In a further disturbing revelation it has transpired that Cavallari’s disappearance came four days after his personal life appeared to spiral out of control. According to a report in Us Weekly authorities were dispatched to Dana Point, California, after a woman reported seeing him outside her apartment with a shotgun.

According to the department, deputies arrested Michael after he admitted to having a loaded shotgun in his trunk and additional ammo was found at his home. Today Grand County Sheriff’s Department is taking every detail of Cavallari’s troubled life into consideration as they attempt to resolve this case. According to Sheriff White: ‘We’ve had investigators in California meeting with authorities there to see if there are any possibilities we need to follow up with.

We’re following up with family, friends, trying to get what his mindset might have been, where he might have been trying to go to. ‘I think he was travelling through the area, everybody we’ve talked to and all the indicators are that he wasn’t coming to Utah specifically, he was just travelling through.’ He said: ‘We’re just keeping all lines open and I want to sent our support to the family and let them know that we’re doing everything we can to bring closure to this.’
