Balladeer Joan Sebastian is dead at 64.

A representative of Universal Music Latin Entertainment-Fonovisa confirmed his death, but did not specify the cause. Mexican musician Joan Sebastian, known as “El Rey del Jaripeo” or “the King of Mexican Rodeo,” died Sunday after a long battle with bone cancer.

He was best known for sentimental love songs like “Tatuajes” and “Secreto de Amor,” sometimes set to simple guitar arrangements and sometimes sung on horseback. A record deal with Capitol awaited. “A writer of achingly beautiful songs that he performed with the right dose of pathos in his ballads, bravura in his rancheras, and always that ineffable sense of intimacy — of singing to you and you alone — made him one of the top singers in the Latin world,” Billboard wrote. Two of his sons were killed in separate incidents in 2006 and 2010, triggering speculation the singer might have been involved in the drug underworld. Though support for its origins may be more mythological than etmyological, Billboard wrote “Joan Sebastian” was a fusion of “Juan, which means free, and Sebastian, which means lover.” (His sister, a numerology expert, prevailed upon him to change the “u” in “Juan” to an “o,” according to Billboard.) This simple image — and simplistic guitar arrangements plus cowboy hats, Western gear and moustache — brought Sebastian great fame.

Despite periodic remissions, it was always on the horizon. “I’ve returned to life three times and all three I’ve fought hard,” he said. “The hardest moment was the first time, when I gave it too much importance and I sat to wait for the doctors’ orders. When I realized that the applause made me better, that my contact with my audience was what made me cling to life, I discovered the most vital aspect of my battle. I honestly think the story would be different if I didn’t have my fans’ support.” “I am not retiring,” he told the Latin Times last year, saying he was no long able to get on a horse. “I am saying goodbye to the rodeos only.
