Met Gala sheer showdown: Beyonce vs Kim

Rihanna suffers a nip-slip as she goes braless and displays MAJOR sideboob in a skimpy sheer top while hosting Met Gala afterparty.

Despite their best intentions, many A-listers – including Sarah Jessica Parker, Anne Hathaway and Solange Knowles – missed the mark and ended up among the worst dressed at this year’s annual Met Gala, which was held at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday. Her sweeping yellow gown prompted wild stares, inevitable derision and a seemingly endless stream of hilarious internet memes that somewhat unfavourably compared it to a frying omelette. Last year’s host, Sarah Jessica – who is typically known for her stylish ensembles – looked as though she may have got slightly carried away by the Chinese-inspired theme, donning an elaborate flame-inspired headdress by Philip Treacy and a one-shouldered black gown with embroidered accents, which she designed in collaboration with H&M.

But while Rihanna’s appearance at the annual Costume Institute Benefit Gala proved to memorable for all the wrong reasons, an outing in New York City later that night was anything but. While the 50-year-old’s gown paid homage to this year’s Met Ball theme – China: Through The Looking Glass – her ensemble, which also featured a black cape covered in red poppies, was distracting and over-the-top. Meanwhile, Anne Hathaway paid tribute to May 4, a date which is known among many as Star Wars Day, thanks to the comical greeting: ‘May the fourth be with you.’ In what appeared to be a nod to the upcoming seventh instalment of the iconic film franchise, Anne channeled her inner Jedi by wearing a form-fitting short-sleeve gold Ralph Lauren gown with a hood – which she kept placed firmly on her head, conjuring up images of the ensembles worn by the movies’ Jedi Knights. Her choice of ensemble exuded vintage glamour and deviated from internet comparisons to egg based snacks and a string of popular TV characters, amongst them Spongebob Squarepants and Sesame Street’s Big Bird. And Katy Perry and Madonna joined the worst-dressed list together when they arrived at the gala wearing coordinating graffiti-emblazoned dresses by Jeremy Scott for Moschnio.

She was joined on the night by fellow revelers Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Zoe Kravitz and Justin Bieber at the after-party – which officially drew the curtain on Monday evening’s event. While Katy, 30, wore a black mermaid-shaped gown with graffiti print on her train and long-sleeve gloves, Madonna, 56, donned a black strapless dress featuring white writing and a matching cape. Other guests included actresses Jessica Alba and Jennifer Lawrence, whose bold silver evening gown ensured she caught the eye as she made her way inside. The top of the seemingly Cirque du Soleil-inspired printed mini dress nearly reached her chin, and in many photos she posed as if she were holding it up.

American model Gigi Hadid was another head turner thanks to her revealing semi-sheer minidress, while pop legend Madonna was at her outlandish best in tight leather micro-shorts and fishnet tights. Hours earlier the songstress quite literally shut down the red carpet in a huge yellow gown – by Chinese couture designer Guo Pei – that left little space for anyone else at the Met Gala. The 29-year-old singer made quite an entrance in a Balenciaga ensemble consisting of a lattice fence cloak over a plunging black embellished jumpsuit with fitted sequinned trousers that stretched over her platform wedges.

While Chloe Sevigny embraced the gala’s theme by donning an Asian-inspired embroidered gown, its bow-shaped strapless design and low-hanging sleeves looked odd when paired with the traditional fabrics used to create it. Earlier that day Rihanna left her temporary home at the five-star Carlyle Hotel – hours before she sashayed into the Chinese themed Met Gala – looking typically stylish in an understated and highly seasonal black dress. With white piping, a thigh length slash and sleeveless detail the garment exposed plenty of flesh as she strolled past star-struck onlookers, all of whom appeared keen to take photos of the Bajan star. Rihanna teamed her dress with a pair of suede Puma pumps, while on-trend circular sunglasses and a vintage print headscarf gave the overall look a bohemian flourish.

Her over-the-top ensemble, which featured a host of silver and gold 3D flower embellishments, jarred with her heavy accessories, including an ornate jewelled necklace, matching earrings and a gold beaded headband. The sultry black and white shot features the raven-haired beauty sporting a white visor, patterned leggings, trainers and a cropped jumper showing off her enviably toned abs. And Miley Cyrus – who went visibly commando – revealed a little less flesh than usual, baring her toned tummy and hips in a long-sleeved studded black gown designed by Alexander Wang. The singer – who was also rumoured to be negotiating a $1 million deal to create a lifestyle collection with the German sportswear brand in November – teamed up with Puma ‘to design and customise classic Puma styles as well as create new styles to add to the Puma product portfolio’.

Puma’s chief executive, Bjørn Gulden, previously said the Grammy Award-winner was the ‘natural choice’ and the ‘perfect ambassador’ for the sportswear company, who had been looking to sign on an “inspiring partner for women’s training”. The 18-year-old actress’s style failed to impress, wearing a boxy, black and pale pink Coach dress, coupled with a Monique Pean bracelet and necklace. The 59-year-old reality TV star swept her hair up into a fierce-looking quiff, and finished off the power-dressing look with strappy gold and black shoes. The benefit, which is chaired by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, attracts both Hollywood A-listers and the fashion industry’s elite – but a ticket to the event costs a whopping $25,000. The singer has already released a number of singles from the record, including FourFiveSeconds, B**** Better Have My Money, and new single American Oxygen.

And while many attendees have been taking to Instagram to share behind-the-scenes snapshots as they get ready, it has been reported that this year’s ball has a social media ban that was apparently instated by Ms Wintour.
