Megan Fox Joins ‘New Girl’ in Recurring Role.

Deschanel will bow out of the show temporarily during the upcoming season on maternity leave, having given birth to her first daughter with husband Jacob Pechenik in August. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles star will play Reagan, a “gorgeous, straight-shooting pharmaceutical sales rep”, who rents out the room of Zooey’s character Jess while she’s away on jury duty. “It’s insane to me that such a gorgeous person can be so funny, but I guess we just all have to accept it,” joked New Girl executive producer Liz Meriwether in a statement. “I’ve been a fan of her comedic skills since This is 40, and I’m so excited to have her on the show. Production is scheduled to gear up this month anyway, though, and the New Girl team has come up with the most classic sitcom way to explain her absence: Jess has been sequestered for jury duty!

We had Megan in mind when we wrote this part – she’s the perfect person to come in and shake these guys up.’ The actress played Kelly Ripa’s niece in two seasons of Hope & Faith early in her career, and appeared in one memorable episode of the first season of Two And A Half Men. But there’s now a hole in the five-person cast, and Jess’s empty room in the loft . . . maybe a moderately famous name can come goose ratings and help fill it?

She and the Beverly Hills 90210 star share two boys – three-year-old Noah and 19-month-old Bodhi – and have since been pictured on family outings together. She will also join James Franco, Will Ferrell and Seth Rogen in “Zeroville.” Created by Liz Meriwether, “New Girl” is produced by Chernin Entertainment in association with 20th Century Fox Television.

And New Girl has featured a few supporting characters of exactly that type, usually with not-great results—remember when Schmidt, Winston, and Coach spent an entire episode trying to woo the hot new neighbors? But let’s be charitable—New Girl is headed into its fifth season, a time when any sitcom could use a change of pace, and replacing doe-eyed Deschanel with Maxim-ready Fox is a big, but inherently temporary, change. They’ve done a great job turning model CeCe into a character with depth; giving Fox more than a few episodes could turn the show’s stock character of “hot girl to distract the boys” into someone with real purpose, too.

Megan Fox was one of the biggest rising stars we had about five years ago; before she’s relegated to a future of hanging out with CGI turtles, why not give her one more chance to surprise us?
