Matt Damon on ‘The Martian,’ top directors, and going back to Jason Bourne.

When astronauts blast off from the planet Mars in ‘The Martian,’ they leave behind Mark Watney (Matt Damon), presumed dead after a fierce storm. Matt Damon continued promoting The Martian on literally every talk show America has to offer by stopping by The Late Late Show with James Corden Tuesday night.

No one has time to sit through all the movies Matt Damon has made over the last 20 years — even though modern classics like We Bought a Zoo should be required viewing. So James Corden helped the Oscar winner act out his whole career in less than 10 minutes, from The Bourne Idenity to The Bourne Supremacy to The Bourne Ultimatum. And yes, he talked about “Bourne.” Question: At the beginning of the film, your character gets impaled on a weather antenna and has to treat himself. It’s so tremendous, in fact, that we’ll even forgive them for neglecting Damon’s underrated yet highly celebrated cameo in EuroTrip, piercings and all. That kind of mitigates the solitude in a way, and also slightly alters his behavior, because he’s not behaving as if he’s alone on a desert island.

Ridley said it was almost like doing three separate movies, because there’s the film with all the NASA guys, the film with Jessica (Chastain, who plays the leader of the mission) and her crew, and then there’s my little movie. That’s the most important decision, is who’s the director, and that just comes from knowing my performance and the movie itself is completely at the mercy of this person. I can justify — and I have — doing a movie where there isn’t even a script, and I’ve had faith that it was going to work out because of the director. I was a big believer in Doug Limon when we shot it and, subsequently, Paul Greengrass, so I’m not surprised because they’re both just excellent filmmakers.
