Eagles, George Lucas, Carole King to Receive Kennedy Center Honors.

The Kennedy Center Honors announced that the 2015 event will pay tribute to George Lucas, American rock band Eagles, Carole King, Rita Moreno, conductor Seiji Ozawa and Broadway star Cicely Tyson. “The Kennedy Center Honors recognizes the extraordinary and unparalleled talents of individuals whose impact and genius have left an indelible mark on civilization,” stated Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rutter in a statement. “Each Honoree and their career-spanning achievements exemplify a rare quality of artistic bravery.” President Obama and Michelle Obama will be on hand for the ceremony, with the medallions presented by Secretary of State John Kerry to the recipients at a State Department dinner the night before, Dec. 5.

In an accompanying statement the Eagles said, “Popular music is one of America’s greatest exports—a bridge that spans geographical and cultural boundaries. We are truly humbled to have been able to be part of this global connection.” King, who started out in New York’s Brill Building songwriting factory turning out hits for numerous rock, pop and R&B performers of the 1960s before launching a solo career that made her one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of the 1970s, said, “I’ve been very lucky to be able to do the work I love for so many years. Schmit and Joe Walsh will be honored. “The members of the Eagles hail from different regions of this great nation, and we feel very fortunate that our music has been embraced by people from all walks of life, all over the world.

Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars performed Sting’s songs at the event, while Usher, Jennifer Hudson and Mavis Staples all paid tribute to Green. 2015 may not bring everything that Back to the Future II promised it would: flying cars, self-lacing shoes, we don’t see ’em happening over the next 12 months. (Then again, don’t bet against Nike.) But this year will definitely pack plenty of punch when it comes to cultural happenings. Mad Max will roar back out of the apocalypse while Mad Men rides off into the sunset, rock’s Antichrist Superstar and hip-hop’s Yeezus will rise again.
