Katy Perry’s Christmas Commercial Is Really, Really Creepy.

In fact, she told Yahoo! The Holiday season is almost upon us, and singer Katy Perry has shared a Christmas song titled “Every Day Is a Holiday.” The song and video is part of her collaboration with the H&M clothing brand for their #HappyandMerry campaign. Style, “I swear, I’m not pitching anything to you here, but when I was a teenager, we didn’t have a lot of money, and H&M really changed the game for me.

I would go to thrift stores and I would go to H&M, and I would put outfits together for myself, and feel like I looked like a hundred dollars when really, I’d spent maybe $30. The enjoyable Christmas themed video sees Perry dressed as a fairy and toy soldier that features appearances from dancing gingerbread men, nutcrackers, elves, and more. And I can still do that now with their clothes!” In the video, the singer rocks a few of the pieces from the holiday collection—which mixes glamour, style, and fun—like the lipstick-red dress, tuxedos with elegant flyaway sleeves, and a T-shirt embroidered with sequined red bows. The shirtless man on top of a convertible that is being dragged by a legion of festive women looks like he’s being sacrificed to the gods of happiness and merriness. The dancing of the expressionless gingerbread men and teddy bears kind-of gives the impression that they’re biding their time as the slaves of humanity until they can stage an assault and take over the world like adorable little Terminators.

None of this is to say that Katy Perry’s song isn’t actually super catchy, and the ad probably will work to bring shoppers in for some holiday shopping, even if it’s just on the chance that visiting an H&M store will lift the curse and free their brains from the refrain of the song. All in all, Katy Perry’s Christmas commercial for H&M plays like there has been a brainstorming session of every single image associated with winter and Christmas that is then brought in entirety to the screen for a musical extravaganza with an explosion of grins and glitter. H&M may be going for a “happy and merry” slogan this holiday season, but folks might be a lot more of both if this Katy Perry commercial is forgotten.
