Justin Bieber Beats One Direction to the Top Down Under.

Bieber’s fourth studio set Purpose (Def Jam/Universal) opens in the top spot on the ARIA Albums Chart, giving the Canadian pop star his third No. 1 Down Under following My Worlds (May 2010) and Believe (June 2012).

Donning a pair of ripped jeans, a brushed up hairdo and a vintage-looking Nirvana band shirt – he looked every bit the regular musician. “justin bieber has just turned up smoking, dressed in a nirvana t-shirt. sort of like a 15 year old going through their indie phase” (@AlexandraMIH) A few weeks ago, Justin became the receiving end of hates and jokes when he wore a Metallica band shirt for his guest appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The singer supported his new set with a promotional visit to Sydney and Melbourne, and his album has spawned eight top 50 tracks, including the former No. 1 “What Do You Mean” and No. 2 “Sorry.” Bieber’s big week means One Direction and their album Made in the A.M. (Syco/Sony) will have to settle for second best. With many pointing out that he is too young to appreciate ‘real music’ like Nirvana, it is highly possible that he may have heard Nirvana given their huge popularity and the existence of Spotify, iTunes, YouTube and CDs.

In other news, Bieber has recently announced a new cover version of Smells Like Teen Spirit for his next album, which will feature a collaboration with Kanye West. Rounding out this week’s top five are If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RCA/Sony), which drops 1-3, Ed Sheeran’s X (Warner), which improves 13-4 ahead of his stadium tour of these parts, and Kerser’s Next Step (Warner), which bows at No. 5.
