Justin Bieber is back on the plaza! Singer brings hits to TODAY concert series.

If Bieber Fever were a condition officially recognized by the American Medical Association, there’s a chance that much of the country would need to be quarantined this week. The ongoing Justin Bieber comeback may be about grown-up pursuits—showing emotion on the V.M.A. stage, sharing a Tonight Show couch with Salman Rushdie—but you can’t ever abandon your roots entirely.Justin Bieber spent his Thursday morning on the rain-soaked stages outside Rockefellar Center for the final installment of the Today show’s summer concert series, where he performed hits like 2010’s “As Long As You Love Me” and the recently released No. 1 single “What Do You Mean?” Bieber’s performance came just a few days after he became the youngest male artist to debut at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, an achievement Guinness World Records recognized him for during his appearance on the Today show. His fans, though, seemed more interested in Bieber’s mere presence: The poncho-clad crowd frequently broke into chants of “Bieber is back” in between songs, including an acoustic version of “Baby” and an NSYNC-style rendition of “Boyfriend.” (The crowd also went wild for his new blonde hair.)

He also said that he’s been emotional during his recent stage performances, such as crying at the MTV VMAs, because “it just feels so great to feel the acceptance.” “Life goes in places you never expected,” he also noted about overcoming his troubled past few years. “I’m just a young man trying to figure it out like everyone else.” Not a bad record for someone whose career is already six years old, and who seems to be moving into a second act that really could be more interesting than the first. It’s his second Digital Songs No. 1, following “Boyfriend.” “Mean” opens at No. 2 on Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart with 23.2 million U.S. streams. Its official lyric video premiered Aug. 28, while its official proper clip arrived late on Aug. 30, the same night that Bieber performed the song on the MTV Video Music Awards. “Mean” debuts on Billboard’s Radio Songs chart at No. 28 with 42 million in radio audience.

As “Mean” opens atop the Hot 100, Bieber bookends the top 10: “Where Are U Now,” by Skrillex and Diplo with Bieber (which rose to No. 8 in July), rebounds 13-10. With the chart having begun nearly five years ago, he’s led the list almost half the time in that span. “Mean” tallies a second week atop the Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks chart. Reflecting the high anticipation for the song, buoyed by a month-long social blitz by Bieber, the song first charted on the survey five weeks ago… ahead of its release and before Beliebers had even heard it. With Bieber’s as-yet-untitled new studio album due Nov. 13, beware: Bieber Fever likely isn’t dying down anytime soon — much to the delight of happily afflicted fans.
