Bieber tops One Direction on Billboard chart, but Adele on the horizon.

In the battle of all battles, Justin Bieber’s new album, Purpose, managed to top One Direction’s competing album on the Billboard charts this past week, but even more impressively, the oft-shameful Canadian treasure has beaten the likes of The Beatles to have the most songs in the Hot 100 in a single week. With 17 songs on the December 5th edition of Billboard’s Hot 100, Bieber has surpassed the record of 14 songs previously held by The Beatles on April 11, 1964, led by “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “Twist and Shout” at Nos. 1 and 2, and fellow Canuck Drake on March 7 and October 17 of this year. The Fab Four held on to the crown until earlier this year, when rapper Drake managed to equal it – twice – with tracks from his two albums – If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late and What A Time to Be Alive.

The Beatles’ record had been equalled by rapper Drake in March and again in October, but Bieber is the first artist to topple the legendary band as record holders. Billboard 200 album chart on Monday, but his reign will be short-lived as British singer Adele looks to break records with her new release. “Purpose,” the fourth studio album by Bieber, sold 520,000 albums, 602,000 songs and was streamed 100 million times in its first week, totaling 649,000 units, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.

Performing a medley of his biggest hits so far this year, Biebs put on an energetic show with his tracks – Where Are U Now?, What Do You Mean and Sorry – at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and even managed to make it rain. One Direction’s fifth, an dpotentially final, album, Made in the AM, was beaten to the top spot by Bieber’s new record, Purpose, which debuted at number on eon the Billboard 200.

Well, the 21-year-old cleverly happened to release music videos for every single song on his new album, except for the track “All In It,” which likely has greater things in store. Taking to the stage in- rather strangely – a hoodie the star thrilled the crowd with his complex dance routine, which was kicked up a notch when it began raining. While he kept his Calvin Klein body underwraps, seeing the star flicking his dripping wet about was enough for the star studded crowd who went wild for his performance.

On/off girlfriend Selena Gomez – who was spotted getting close with Justin over the weekend – was in the audience and no doubt approved of his sexy display. As album sales have dropped drastically due to the rise in online streaming, it’s increasingly rare for an artist to top 1 million copies sold in the first week.

Rapper Logic’s “Incredible True Story” debuted at No. 3, rapper Jeezy’s “Church In These Streets” at No. 4 and country artist Chris Young’s “I’m Comin’ Over” at No. 5.
