Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and wife expecting a baby girl.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan announced they are expecting their first child, a girl, in a post on the social network on Friday. “This will be a new chapter in our lives. We’ve already been so fortunate for the opportunity to touch people’s lives around the world – Cilla as a doctor and educator, and me through this community and philanthropy,” Zuckerberg wrote in the post on Mark’s Facebook page. “Now we’ll focus on making the world a better place for our child and the next generation.” Chan and Zuckerberg, who met at Harvard and dated for almost a decade before getting married in 2012, also revealed in the post that they had experienced three miscarriages in their attempts to have a child over recent years. “Most people don’t discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you – as if you’re defective or did something to cause this. Zuckerberg, 31, did not say when their daughter is due but said the pregnancy was far enough along that the risk of miscarriage was low. “We hope that sharing our experience will give more people the same hope we felt and will help more people feel comfortable sharing their stories,” wrote the founder of the world’s largest social media network. It has taken steps to make it easier for young employees to delay having children, and Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg has become a spokesperson for how women – and men – handle their professional and family responsibilities.

Zuckerberg, who often uses his Facebook page to make both corporate and personal announcements, opened up about the emotions he and Chan, who is a doctor, have felt while trying to have children. So you struggle on your own,” Zuckerberg wrote. “It’s a lonely experience.” The social media mogul added, “In today’s open and connected world, discussing these issues doesn’t distance us; it brings us together. Zuckerberg didn’t make any promises, but he wrote: “We’re looking forward to welcoming her into the world and sharing more soon when she’s ready to come out and meet everyone!”

When we started talking to our friends, we realized how frequently this happened — that many people we knew had similar issues and that nearly all had healthy children after all.
