Jurassic World sequel revealed for 2018

Here’s When Chris Pratt Will Return to Movie Screens for Jurassic World 2.

LOS ANGELES — After taking the summer box office by storm with more than US$1.5 billion (S$2.1 billion) globally, the Jurassic World dinosaurs will be getting a sequel slated for June 22, 2018, Comcast Corp’s Universal Pictures said yesterday (July 23). On Wednesday, “Jurassic World” became the No. 3 top-grossing film of all-time, surpassing “The Avengers” with a monster $1.52 billion in ticket sales.

On July 15th, a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) complaint was sent from Universal Pictures France to Google regarding the new “Jurassic World” film. Jurassic World, which rebooted Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park dinosaur franchise in June, has become the third highest-grossing film in history, behind only James Cameron’s Titanic and Avatar.

And after the sequel’s record-breaking box-office debut—not to mention its $1.5 billion worldwide gross—Universal is officially cementing plans for the first of those lucrative follow-ups. A DMCA complaint is a request owners of material can submit in order to copyright infringing material removed from websites—in this case, removed from appearing in search results. The sequel will see the film’s leads Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return, along with Spielberg as executive producer and Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow penning the script. Jurassic World, co-produced with Legendary Pictures, exceeded early expectations to achieve the largest opening weekend in movie history with US$524.1 million at the global box office.

No word yet on who will direct the 2018 edition, but Trevorrow, who directed last month’s box-office monolith, has already set the groundwork for a different filmmaker taking over the franchise’s helm. “Jurassic Park is like Star Wars,” Trevorrow said last month. “Different directors can give a different taste to each movie.” Although he said he would not direct another Jurassic movie, he did say he would agree to be involved in other capacities. The film added to an already stellar year for Universal Pictures, which became the fastest studio to hit US$2 billion at the box office in a calendar year last month, buoyed by the success of February’s Fifty Shades of Grey, April’s Furious 7 and May’s Pitch Perfect 2. Good news for Howard, though—after much Internet haranguing for her character’s impractical high heels, the 2018 release date gives Universal ample time to find her more sensible dinosaur-outrunning footwear. Upcoming Universal movies this year include M Night Shyamalan’s horror The Visit, drama Everest, Aaron Sorkin’s Steve Jobs biopic and Guillermo Del Toro’s gothic horror Crimson Peak.
