‘Jurassic’ roars past ‘Avengers’ for #3 on box office list

Jurassic World is now the third highest-grossing movie of all time.

The Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard-starring Universal Pictures blockbuster has now brought in $1.522 billion worldwide, passing The Avengers’ $1.520 billion.Going to the movies in the U.S. cost an average of $8.61 during the second quarter of 2015, according to exhibition industry trade group the National Association of Theatre Owners. Universal, the studio behind “Jurassic World,” has cracked the top five list of highest-grossing films twice this year after propelling “Furious 7″ to $1.51 billion globally. Moviegoers have rediscovered their appreciation for 3D releases, with 3D screenings for the likes of “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “San Andreas” and “Jurassic World” drawing more than 40% of their opening weekend business from those showings.

Theaters are investing in more amenities, with major chains like AMC and Regal outfitting their locations with plush recliners, allowing them to charge visitors higher prices.
