An undisclosed buyer snaps up Lennon’s ‘lost’ Gibson J-160E guitar.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — An acoustic guitar that John Lennon used to record and write “Love Me Do,” ”I Want to Hold Your Hand” and other hit songs sold for $2.4 million at auction.John Lennon’s stolen acoustic guitar was sold for top dollar on Saturday at a California auction fetching over $2.4 million while a Beatles drum head went for more than $2 million – marking two of the priciest rock n’ roll items sold to date.

The 1962 J-160E Gibson guitar had been in the possession of an aspirant musician who bought it in the late 1960s without knowing it had been stolen many years before, according to auctioneer Darren Julien. (When converted, the sum paid for the guitar amounts to approximately 2.24 million euros.) The guitar was stolen from Lennon at a December 1963 Christmas concert. The instrument’s authenticity was confirmed by its matching serial number and the grain in the wood, along with certain other distinguishing features.

The auction took place at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, with around one hundred people attending the event and thousands following the bidding online. The guitar’s whereabouts was unknown for over 50 years until a California man discovered last year that a guitar in his possession may have historical value. Half of the proceeds from selling the guitar will be donated to the charity organization Spirit Foundation which was founded by Lennon himself and his widow Yoko Ono.

An expert was able match the guitar’s serial number, wood grain and markings to the one Lennon used in the early 1960s, Julien’s Auction said in a news release. In the 15-month period the instrument was in Lennon’s possession, it was used on a number of the band’s early hits, including “She Loves You,” “Please, Please, Me,” “All My Loving” and “From Me to You,” the auction house said. Meanwhile, Kurt Cobain’s grungy green sweater – famously worn by the rocker 21 years ago during his MTV Unplugged performance – was nabbed for $140,800 or two times higher than the estimated price.

Meanwhile, the drum head that the Beatles used in their landmark performance on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ was also auctioned on Saturday for $2.1 million.
