A Look at the Trailer for ‘Joy,’ Starring Jennifer Lawrence.

Russell to tell the story of Joy Mangano, a single mother of three and the inventor of the “Miracle Mop.” But you don’t really get that much from the first trailer. The first two-minute clip splices heartwarming and gut-wrenching family scenes with more fantastical looking shots, suggesting the film might dip into surreal storytelling territory. “Joy” is the third Russell film to star Lawrence in the last three years – they previously worked together on 2012’s “Silver Linings Playbook” and 2013’s “American Hustle.” She won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in “Playbook.” “Joy” also features Russell favorites Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro, along with Virginia Madsen and Isabella Rossellini. The celebrity trio made magic in the blockbuster hit “Silver Linings Playbook,” while Lawrence and Cooper shined in “American Hustle,” both of which were directed by Russell. In the first clip released from the film, Lawrence’s character struggles to find her way in life as she matures to adulthood, gets married and has children.

Lawrence as the entrepreneur Joy Mangano, the creator of the Miracle Mop, among other inventions. “Listen to me; I’ll tell you what’s gonna come of you,” the trailer opens. She doesn’t seem to truly come into her own until she becomes an inventor, entrepreneur and founder of Ingenious Designs, also known for creating the Huggable Hanger.

It’s a stern woman’s voice, addressing Joy as a girl. “You are going to grow up and be a strong, smart young woman.” As the woman continues in voiceover, we see Joy, seemingly fulfilling the prophecies of the speech.
